Another Surgery

This one is to be on my right elbow due to calcitic tendonitis. Back in March I tore my bicep tendon....

https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/5...n-a-sling.html

and wore a hard cast for a few weeks. I developed bursitis while I had the cast on, then developed a sympathetic tendonitis in my tricep tendon and that led to the calcitic tendonitis. I have done PT for the last four+ months and a month or so ago noticed that my elbow bone looked like it was sharpened to a point. Hurts like hell too.

So, as soon as the workers comp gestapo approve the surgery, I am back under the knife. The doc says it will only be a couple weeks immobilization.....I've heard that before. Hopefully this will cure it for good.

With the elbow surgery, this will be about the fifth surgery in the last 15 years. Scars everywhere.

A couple weeks off work to drink beer sounds good though.

I am just wondering if my elbow injury was aggravated by all the practice I have been doing getting ready for the tests I need to take following my last little procedure

Well bursitis is the inflammation of the bursa sac that surrounds any joint. It can be because by many things, but it is most often caused by an impact or traumatic injury. Any itis is an inflammation of the effected area.

With your question about immobilization causing this it will be very hard to prove. They can always state that you did not follow the standing orders and thus violated your rehab protocol.

Nothing like pyramid training for rehabbing elbows: 12 oz curl, 10 oz curl, 8 oz curl, 6 oz curl, 4 oz curl, 2 oz curl. Repeat 3 times. More sets can be counterproductive as they may lead to further injury.

I would say, that all depends on how much you enjoyed it.

Kinda hard to violate a rehab protocol when your arm is in a cast from palm to pit but I am telling you what the doc and the physical therapists told me. I am trusting that they know what they are talking about.

What I know is that prior to the injury at work I had no elbow problems. Now I need surgery. I don't have to prove a thing to anyone.

No problem - it takes more than that to offend me. My response probably came across stronger than I wanted.

What I meant is that my injury and my treatment have been well documented from day one. I had witnesses to the original accident and everything that has happened since then has been documented as well. The problem I have now is relatively common according to the orthopedic surgeon and the physical therapist I have been seeing. The MRI confirmed the original injury and the X-ray the other day confirmed the calcium deposit on my tricep tendon - something that wasn't there in March. Worker's Comp has paid all the bills so far so if they wanted to try to deny surgery, they would have to prove my problem ISN'T work related. They'll have a tough time doing that.

What I do know is that it hurts like a SOB. I can't even rest my elbow on the car armrest without it making my eyes water.

OK...

The calcification is caused by the injury and it going to be a (female dog) to get better. They only way to get the calcification out of a tendon is ultrasound (Which you will like) and ROM exercises....Have they prescribed any NASID's (non-steroidal Anti inflammatory) medications?

I also take it that your original injury was a break around the olecranon process.

Actually the original injury was a partial tear of the bicep tendon, just above the elbow. Since it didn't detach the doctor put me in a cast and by immobilizing it for a month, allowed it to heal. Some PT and strengthening and it was 100%. It was while I was wearing the cast that the bursitis flared up. Also, during the rehab of the bicep that the tricep tendon problem started as what they are calling sympathetic injury - caused by compensating for the bicep by using the tricep.

The calcium deposit is directly over the elecronon and it looks like my elbow was sharpened to a point. It sucks.....

Ah, I now know what happened and yes they are correct. The calcification was from not moving you bicep tendon.

Getting it back to normal is going to hurt also. I hate to tell you that, because you need to break the adhesions from the calcification.

I know - I'm not looking forward to it either. It has been since March when I hurt it originally and I just want it over with. It's (of course) my writing and working hand but according to the doctor, I'll only have to have it partially immobilized for 10 days or so. Better than the month in the cast.
