i gotta have some teeth pulled-

hey all, i have a bad molar, and some wisdom teeth coming in, and NO dental insurance.

the pain has grown almost unbareable in the last few days.

i need to get at least two removed i assume, it only hurts on one side, feels like i got hit with a sledge hammer. i only got 2 hours of sleep last night because of it

how do they remove them? cut the roots? or just grab on and yank with a tool? one of them is so crumbled from when the filling fell out... i dont know if theres enough to grab onto with a tool.

how much do you think it may cost? i think ive made too much in the last 2 years to get on state healthcare.

any advice / info ./ experience you can offer??????????

its gotten so bad i almost wanna grab a rock, and a hockey skate to knock it out myself and get it over with... but im afraid itll only make things worse with my luck!!

Depending on how impacted they are thats basically how they get them out. A friend of mine just had his removed and they had to smash the teeth into pieces in order to remove them. His jaw was soar for a week but he said it felt belt when they were gone.

Good luck

Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) to help the pain for now, not aspirin or tylenol. It sounds like you have an infection in your tooth, maybe go to the minor emergency clinic and get some antibiotics before you see the dentist (cheaper and you might have to take them before the dentist will work on you anyway).

If it is an infection then this will help temporarily (a couple weeks to a couple months). Does the pain feel like its coming from the bad molar or is it all over the one side and hard to pinpoint? I'm not an MD just have some experience in this area, unfortunately.

Maybe you can be a patient at a Dental shool (University of Minnesota has one). They're much cheaper and I've had excellent luck.

Some horribly intense pain teeth can give, I feel for you. Good luck.

PS. make sure to read the Ibuprofen warnings. Skip the beer while on it.

tdister- thanks

the pain, starts in the teeth, starts throbbing, then spreads outward, pretty much covering an area on the side of my head thats the size of my hand. its enough to make ya wannt slam your head through a wall, but that only makes things worse right?
theres a small family dentist office a mle from my g/fs house ill call tommorrow. im not concerened as to how much pain ill go through in the process but its become obvious the tooth thats half chipped away has to go, and that the wisdom tooth coming in on the top is causing too much pressure.

the tooth thats half chipped away... got that way cause a filling fell out and i didnt have the money to fix it right away. between eating and fight training, its slowly deterriorated.

im afraid to go to a medical school though....

and as for the beer / pain killers.... yeah im drinking some MGD' bottles right now... cause i know i wont sleep without it. havent taken any pain killers in 6-7 hours.

thanks again.

anyone have any fun stories of having teeth pulled?

Yeah, I was a little worried about the dental school, but I was treated better and the work was top notch w/ little pain. They wanted $3600+ for what I needed at the dentists office (I wanted to save my teeth). At the school it will be about $750 when all said and done (still need crowns).

Once the beers out the Ibuprofen really will help. It sounds infected, the antibiotics will take about a day and a half to stop the pain.

Had to have my wisdom teeth pulled when I broke my jaw so they could go in and do their thing. Not much fun, but been thru worse (the jaw surgery for example).

On the upside: the pain you feel now is the worst part, once the nerves are removed it's really only the pain from swelling for a couple days.

Be very careful if you have an infection going at the roots of your teeth. It can go down into your jaw bone and start eating away at the bone.
You mentioned that you have no dental insurance, but do you have medical? It sounds like you will need to see an oral surgeon to get your teeth out. If this is the case, get it done at a hospital and your medical covers it 100%, less your co-pay.
Good luck, and I hope your pain goes away soon.

I had mine removed about 2 years ago. I went for the whole package when it came time to do the surgery....out cold, unconscience, pain killers...the whole nine. They juiced me up with some needle, and I laughed, and was like, "This is doing nothinggggg tooooo meeeeeeee.....uhhhhhhhhh". It slowed me up a lot, then came the silly gas, and I was out before it even hit my face. They said that when I got up, I said, "what are they feeding these animals". I was watching Fear and Loathing all week prior for some reason. I was soar for 2 or 3 days, never bruised, and one of mine came out in pieces. PLEASE be careful with what they give you in the end though. They gave me vicodin, and I'll tell you what...they knock you on the floor. I never really take pills at all, maybe vitamins, but to go from that to something like vicodin took me out for almost an entire day. I actually flushed them all away after 2. I was fine with a light tylenol after that. Those painkillers can be very addicting if you don't pay attention. I had people upset with me for flushing them all away.

If your face is not swollen with infection, it soon will be. Thats when the pain will REALLY start. Get the problem taken care of asap. There's more than just infection and pain involved such as:
Can tooth infection cause heart problems?

"tooth infection can cause the bacteria in the mouth to circulate in the blood stream to infect the heart valve, causing bacterial endocarditis, most especially in people who may have had rheumatic heart disease when they were young. This condition affects and weakens the heart valves, making them susceptible to infection."

In the meantime you can help the pain with over the couter meds. Get a small bottle of clove oil, dip a piece of cotton ball in, squeeze out excess and put it in the broken tooth. It tastes like crap but it sure does help kill the pain. Be careful not to use too much and try not to let the cotton swab lay on your gums as it will burn the tissue. I've had a couple abcessed/impacted teeth that had the whole side of my face swollen and it's definatly no fun. When you get to the point where you have so much pain, you'll try almost anything. The clove oil works.

Good luck!

My regular dentist doesn't pull teeth, so he referred me to a Dr. Yankum, oral surgeon. All he does is pull teeth. I've had 3 extracted. A couple shots of zylocain, a few yanks and it's out. I've had no real pain afterward, actually I never take the painkillers he prescribes. He charges $110 a tooth.

This is probably very very rare, but there was a kid not too long ago who had a tooth infection spread inside his head. He was declared brain dead.

Yikes. Sorry to hear about yer pain. When my four wisdom teeth were pulled at the same time they had to cut the gums open and then break the teeth into pieces to remove. Thank goodness for Nitrous Oxide. I got to take a nap and just woke up feeling very numb everywhere and talking like some sorta hippie. Check with yer state health care contacts to see if there is any programs available that you might qualify for. Also, contact some bigger dentist or orthodontist offices to see if they know of any special programs for assistance. Maybe yer local dental colleges can do something for you? Good luck.

I had my wisdom teeth taken out about twenty years ago. Several shots of Novacane to numb the area then the dentist went to work with a hammer, chisel and pliers. When the Novacane wore off I took some asprin.

BuiltTough, Get the teeth removed ASAP. If it spreads you will be in worse shape, especially because with impacted teeth the pain killers will not work because the pus prevents the medicine from traveling down the nerve root.

Here are some helpful hints:

Listerene will kill anything it can reach.

Use Tylenol to kill the pain.

Rinse your mouth with warm salt water.

Do not drink or eat anything with caffeine (coffee chocolate) or a high sugar content (soda etc.) or alcohol (unless you want to nuke yourself so you can sleep).

Lie on your back to sleep, your nasal passages will drain better. If the pain is unbearable, lie on a heating pad applied to the side that hurts.

Sometimes applying wax or chewing gum with aspirin to an exposed nerve (broken tooth) will give you some relief.

Years ago when I was a kid I had some work done at a University school of dentistry. The work was performed by a senior dental student with a prof looking on. The work was well done and cost nothing. I would advise you to check it out. Good luck.
