Clutch Question
In checking further, I notice what appears to be a master cylinder, identical to the one for the brakes. I added brake fluid to it, and pumped it up. The clutch worked for one shift, then was back to nothing. I'm assuming the problem is with this cylinder--correct?
My questions--1. Is this difficult to replace?
2. Is it the same as the brake master cylinder?
3. Does it take regular brake fluid, or something else?
4. As this is obviously new to me, is there anything
else I should know?
Thanks in advance!
you have a hydraulic clutch evidently...
the seals in the master cylinder could be bypassing, or the seals in the slave cylinder could also be 'bad'
look for obvious leaks ... under the dash/ firewall for the MC, and drips from the slave cylinder under the truck.
if the fluid level became too low, bleeding would also be necessary...
if history of unit is unknown, rebuild or replace it... bleeding would also then be necessary... make sure the residual fluid is flushed in the lines.
good luck.
The clutch mater cylinder is usually a little smaller than the brakes master. The fluid should be the same, DOT 3 most likely.
If the fluid is disappearing, you have a leak and it should be pretty easy to find. If the fluid is not going away, it is bypassing (flowing past the plunger internally) in one or both of the cylinders. That is why they would need rebuilt.
To rebuild them you need to remove them, clean them and get a brake hone from a local parts shop. The hone goes on an electric drill and it is used to smooth up the sealing surface. Then clean everything with new brake fluid, assemble and re install. Replace the tubing and bleed. There are many bleeding procedures, if you have a shop manual that will help a lot.
Hope this is helpful.
