Hey guys, I have a 1988 F250 and have been having issues with my clutch. Mainly Putting it into reverse. I replaced the master clutch cylinder because there was some seepage inside the cab so I figured that was the problem. I have bleed and bleed the clutch to the point I have gone through 3 bottles of brake fluid. The clutch lets out way to soon. Maybe an inch or less off the floor.
I know that it is not the clutch it's self because as my helper was pushing in on the clutch while I was bleeding it, I can see that the rod on the slave cylinder is not pushing the fork far enough.
Now I am thinking that my slave cylinder is bad. But I always thought that if the slave cylinder was bad that you would just have no pressure in the pedal. I had one go bad on me in a 94' F150 I had before and that is what it did.
I don't see where it is leaking, and I am not loosing fluid. So could it be the slave cylinder?
The pedal bushing is torn up a little bit. It pops the rod of the master off a little bit. I will replace that. And there is maybe a 1/16" of flex. Popping the rod back into place does help. The pedal is stiff. It is not mushy at all. How much flex is acceptable?
I had an 88 and the clutch would engage lower and lower as the fluid was leaking out and collecting in the bell housing. When my clutch was shot I went ahead and changed the slave and the problem was solved. Not sure what trans and engine combo you have but mine was a 302 with a 5 speed.
According to ford and the Chilton and Haynes repair manuals you should replace both at the same time slave cylinders are a pain to bleed follow manual procceedures
It's a ZF 5 speed behind a 7.3. Being that it is an external slave cylinder it is fairly easy to swap out. Just bleeding it is the pain. I will go ahead and swap it out and see what that does for me. It's only like $29.99 at O'Reilly's for new slave cylinder. It does go into gears. Like I said reverse is the problem and sometimes first.
