I really would like to do power brakes for my '60 F-100, but it's a standard transmission with the clutch master cylinder mounted right next to the brake master cylinder on the firewall. I have looked at all the kits and read a bunch of posts here on the forums, but no one addresses this issue (no room on the firewall for the brake booster). Is there a way to install a power brake kit on this type of truck without a major redesign of the entire brake system?
This has been addressed here several times actually.
The Original P/B Booster was Mounted on the Drivers Side Frame Rail below the Driver & it was either installed @ the Factory or as an Add On @ the Dealership.
If you can get you hands on a 1960 F Series Truck Parts & Accessaries Book it'll show you How it's installed, they Do cost though when you can find them.
By the By, the Co. that made the P/B Boosters still is in business & you can still get the booster that was used, otherwise one has to Scrounge the Wrecking Yards for the parts.
The only problem I ran into on my 60 F250 6cyl with the MP power booster is that the reseroir ends up hitting the air cleaner. I think it would fit fine in a 8 cyl or if I could find a smaller air filter canister. I haven't installed for that reason and am waiting 'til I find time/money/etc. to install a v8.
The original power brake booster was called a hydrovac or something simular. Many trucks and some cars used them, and they all interchange. It mounted somewhere in the brake line before the line splits to the different wheels. It is not a big deal to install them, and they work as well as any power brake unit. I would also add a vacuum tank as you can run out of vacuum if your engine stalls when you slam on the brakes.
