Do Chips really work?

I have a 05' F-150 5.4 and I heard about these chips but do they really work for gas milage and power? If they do, what would you recommend?

Thank you,

Well personnaly chips can work wonders and sometimes they just cause problems. I have heard alot about the Edge evolution programer that is out for the F-150...some and most of the comments are praising the Edge and some have had problems. Your best bet would be to go read the Edge Evolution thread in the F-150 forum for your year of truck...lots of good info on that thread.

No such thing as a chip for your year 5.4. Tuners, however, do exist and they do work. Check our Troyer Performance for a custom tuned solution that won't cause you any problems. Let him know you saw him here, he usually gives a discount when you do that.

Fuel mileage is function of your right foot, and in gas motors it will take a lot of miles to pay for a tuner with it's increase in mileage. Tuners are primiarily a power adder and don't lend themselves to better mileage, but it does happen.

Chips are hand held tuners these days. most all of them will come with a custome tune, however to realy tunee your truck for power you need to go to your local dyno-tuner and have it done on a dyno that can moniter your air fuel mixture. the most popular hand held tuner in the lightning club is the SCT tuner and number two is the diablo-sport both of which do a good job. the dyno tune is important so you dont damage your motor, like burn a hole in a piston. a tuner will not help your fuel millage just your horse power.

In talking to Dale I from Tymar Performance he said a milage tune in a gasser will work well by retarding the timing. I have the 7.3 and he said there is really no such thing as a milage setting for a smoker.

The diesels usually pick up 1-2 mpg. I don't trust the people who claim 4-6mpg. The turbo charger makes a big difference in power and effiency.

i have an edge evo on my 03 5.4 150.. and it works okay for certain things like towing and firmer shifting , but mine made my truck run worst, even on JUST the tranny tune it wouldnt spin the tires if it was sitting in an oil bath, it would studder and lag really bad and the power wouldnt come on til about 8-9mph and even then it was the same as stock, i turned it back to stock after i barely could make the hill by the garage when i stepped on it..... and it stock form again it atleast chirps the tires pretty good, last time i emailed edge about it they told me to update it, which it was, but after behind on hold for a halfhour i wwas like okay i will take his word for it and try it again, but it was up to date, and being the owner of a work car it was 2 weeks before i drove my truck again and usually i dont get enough miles on it to see what it is doing, so i emailed edge back again last week and got no response yet........i like their platform, but if they dont work with me here the other 2 new diesel truck outside might get a different brand tuner...

I've tried Superchip,Hypertech & SCT. The SCTwas by far the best of the 3 on my gas rig. I used Troyer for my tunes & I was very happy with his work. I gained a little mpg & good power. Plus the shifting with the SCT unit was excellent. I gained more mileage with the efans I got from Troyer than any mod I added to my truck. They gave me almost 2 mpg over the stock fan setup.I have a hypertech 3 stage programmer on my 04 psd. I just made a 700 mile trip in the truck using the lowest setting & got 21 mpg. I was leaning toward getting a SCT for this truck till this trip. I doubt I'll change to the SCT now. I don't plan to race the truck or add any more performance mods so I think the Hypertech is all I need

Hey Lariat97 what is SCT? I'm familar with the others. I have a Diablo chip on my 2002 F150 SuperCrew 5.4L and need to get a tuner to take advantage of the latest mods I added (Dual-Hi Flo exhaust, Airaid CIA, PowerAid TBS) so I can maximize my power when I'm out hunting and maximize my gas mileage when I'm slugging back and forth to work M-F.
