i have a 77 f250 400,c6,205,hi pinon d44 front, and a d60 rear reg cab long bed i'm looking to make a trail truck out of this.i would like to run a 36 to 38 tire. the problem i having is finding a lift that will help this truck flex. right now its a brick with almost no flex. so what lifts would u guy use? any ideas on how to make the 44 last(will change it out later right now it's just not in the budget)?
and just to let u know i have no fab skills
Use a 4 or 6 inch Super duty front spring with the "Military Wrap" leaf removed.
You may also have to remove an additional leaf to birng the truck down for the 77 highboy. Heak these trucks clear 35's stock, but do not flex very much.
There are pics in my gallery of a 74 with SD springs. I am currently running a modified shock mount so I can utilize a longer shock to accomodate all of the travel.
My measurements from shock mounting point to mounting point are as follows:
Static: 29 5/8 inches eye to eye.
Compressed: 21 3/4 inches eye to eye (I bump stopped it to keep the tire from eating the fender, it can go more.
Extended: 36 15/16 inches eye to eye ( the shock is the limiting factor right now, while the spring does not extend much further, I did limit it with a strap so it does not damage the shock.
This set-up with a stock shock bracket will only flex as much as the short shock will let it.
The SD spring from some manufacturers is far superior to any spring manufactured by any companies that make a kit for the 73-79 trucks.
You do not have to have mad fab skills, but you will have to make some modifications, and have a 4" grinder and a 1/2" drill. New shackles will have to be made. You can make them yourself, or have them made. It is a very simple and very reasonably priced modification.
Plenty of ideas for the rear too. I do not recommend SD springs out back. (they do not fit high boys anyway, but still do not suggest using them out back.
IF it is a pre 77.5, then it's a highboy, and you wouldn't need a lot of lift.
75F350 made a very good suggestion for the front.
You might want to check out some of these for the rear(or some like them): http://broncograveyard.com/bronco/i-...n__10_leaf.htm
They aren't cheap, but they will flex great.
i don't think that this truck is a highboy because it has a married transfer case. it has 33s on it now and i don't think that 35 would fit. so will super duty front springs fit?
and are f150 and f250 rear springs the same length? sorry for all of the ?s. and i do thank u all for the info
Ah ha, then you do not have a 77, you have a 77.5. The SD springs actually fit these trucks with fewer modifications. The 77.5 hangers and shckles are longer than the highboys, and make more room for the later spring packs.
If the truck has a married t-case, and it was born that way, then you have a later truck. This means that you will need the larger spring pack to accomplish the same amount of lift. This is why I suggested the 4 and the 6 inch springs.
The later frame will need a slightly biger spring to achieve the same amount of lift, so for the 36" tire, with flex, you will need a 6" super duty spring. This is actually my favorite spring. It offers the most lift without sacrificing flex.
You will have to find tha happy medium between lift and flex, but for 38" rubber, you can probably get away with a similar spring as mine, and remove two leafs for the right ride heigth. This actually means more flex. Remove one more leaf, and it gets even better, just make sure you are prepared to buy a damper that can keep up with the added movement.
As far as the rear springs go, you 77.5 or later truck has a 3" wide spring, and the 150 should have a 2.5" unit. This means that they are really not interchangable.
With the same 1/2" drill, and the same grinder, you can install a later model chevy spring that is about 10 inches longer than your stock one, and it will flex like crazy. Rides pretty good too.
what year model chevy springs? do they need to be off of a 3/4 ton? are u talking about a 52'' spring or a 56'' spring? is there any mods that will have to be done to the spring pearch? i guess i need the same 6 inch lift spring. what year model super duty lift spring? as far as making spring shackles that is not a problem. i just can't weld.
thank for all of the info so far. it has been most helpful
Hey Ed the 150 4wds came factory with a 3" wide rear spring. And all 77.5-79 250s had them. Im kinda curios about the chebby springs too although i dont wanna hear the smack bout chebby parts makin my truck run good from the yokels around here.
