I gotta 78 F-250 351M C6 Np205 and i wanna swap the C6 for the AOD. how will this affect the transfercase? what will i have to modify? i know i will have to buy a new drive line & thats fine. will the aod bolt right up or will i need to do some changing of things? i am gonna do this within the next month so i would like to know.
Thankx for the link. how hard would this be to do this conversion? i was hoping that it would be a bolt up switch but i guess not. what trans would bolt right up and not have to do a lot of grinding and fabricating? what auto trans was on the 460 in the 80's? don't the the 460 and 351M have the same pattern?
Ive never done this conversion, or even looked into it. It looks to me though that it takes more money that it does work. If i was in this situatuion, which i might be soon, i would just swap in a C6 that i know will work for me untill i can afford to either rebuild my bad tranny, or one that will just get me by. I think the 385 series engines and 385 series engines had the same bellhousings? I know that an FE tranny would not work, bellhousing bolt pattern is different. If there are any good salvage yards in your area, i would just go to one, knowing what truck/motor/bellhousing/tranny you are looking for, and pull a tranny that looks good in the pan, and is off a truck that has been hit from the side, or from behind, hell, even rolled. Ofcourse, there is no guarantee it will work, but how many used trannys can you try before you reach the cost of buying a new or rebuilt one. Good luck, have fun, and keep it as simple as possible, sounds to me like you need to fix the problem rather than upgrading right now, but ultimatly, do what you want and what you think will work best for you. Hopefully someone who has some knowledge about trannys will lend a hand and some info soon.
The 351M/400 and 460 have the same bolt pattern for transmissions. A couple of other engines (429 for instance) also have the same pattern.
460's always used C6's for automatic transmission.
