Hi guys, great site, wish I had found it about $5000 ago.
I've got a 95 F-250 PSD, E40D, 340K, 42K on new dealer rebuilt trans. Starting off it winds out real far and shifts really hard in 1st and 2nd. 3rd and 4th seem ok. Once in O/D it jumps in and out and when I slow down it still goes in out of O/D and won't shift down. I speed up in O/D or it seems to race through the gears. Now the O/D light flashes on and off unless at high speeds. Fluid and filter changed at 31K. New cam positioning sensor and speed sensor replaced about a month ago. This all happens intermitantly. I can go for a couple of weeks and it runs great. Left it at the garage and they drove it for a week and had no problems. I sure hate the thought of a new transmission. Any help would be appreciated

Get the codes read. When the light flashes a code is stored in memory. It will stay there for about amonth after the light stops flashing. Without the code all anyone can do is guess.
sad to say 5000bills later and you still have a problem. TT my truck is the same, less the new rebuild and I am having a simular problem. I have had the truck scaned and all that is coming up is VSS. I have replaced it twice in the last month and the problem is still there. FORD dealer states O must be your transmission is gone or something major. BULL*****
Welcome to FTE!
Is the Torque coverter locking and unlocking or shifting gears?
The intermintant part seems like electrical to me but I'm no expert. You could disconnect an clean all the connectors you find on the tranny...might help. C00nhunterjoe is our resident tranny expert in this forum he'll stop by and give you a better idea of what to do.
Check here too, it's the FTE tranny forum: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/forum69/

I'm flatterd cuda! if you had a ligth flashing then you had a code, i need a code to help there. If the torque converter is acting up you will have a trans light and the epc will default to max and you will bark the tires on every shift(very cool) since you only have a hard shift on 1-2 i suspect a possible solonoid pack, maybee, need codes, a faulty speed sensor (trans not rear) that could send it haywire too. but to diagnose this one those codes are really needed.
oh, and not neccesaraly screwed on the tc replacement part, i like to replace it whenever an overhaul is perfromed too, yeah they can be flushed but its much safer to replace it
Thanks for the help. I had a new tourque converter put in 70 or 80K ago. I'm tired of taking this into the shop. Where might I find a decent quality code machine. Also any suggestions on a cleaner for the connectors. At least nobody said new transmission yet
the way you described the problem doesnt sound like a tranny, drive to any advance auto or autozone and they pull codes for free or jump to the thread "NO START" and check out the scanner that fordforever just bought , it seems to have some good features, as long as you can pull codes and get pid data you will be set
while you are at advance pick up a can of electrical connector cleaner
OK, I went out and bought a code scanner, now I cant find the harness to hook up to. I found a plug by the drivers side headlight but it's not going to plug into anything I've got.
well I read the instruction manual and did the test. codes say Pass,no codes found. The machine won't give me any other information at all. It kept saying system error and not responding to any test. I did this with the engine on and off. I tested my car and got all kinds of info. Should I just take it to the dealer?
dealer will rape you, sounds like your scanner doesnt work on diesel's fordforever just had the same problem, take the truck to advance or autozone, they will pull codes for free
P0500 speed sensor, pulled the one in the rear end and it's not the same one they gave me at Advance. Can't seem to locate the same thing on the transmission
