They gave you the wrong one, as usual. The one you need pulls double duty. VSS and RABS, (rear antilock brake sensor). It sends a signal to the PSOM (Programmable Speedometer/odometer module). The tranny uses that signal to shift gears.
Clean the one you took out, check the connector for damage, Look at the exciter ring in the diff for damage. The closer you can get the RABS to the exciter ring the better. Be sure to re-set the code befroe you try it again.

Well I put the new speed sensor in and the transmission shifts fine now. I guess this is where the intermitent part comes in. I'll give it a couple of days and see what happens. When I pulled the old one it seemed to me to be a bit sludgy. I think I read somewhere here that this is a magnetic sensor. I went ahead and changed the gear oil. Its been a few years since I did that. Hopefully that was part of the problem.
I took the truck for a test run down to Key Largo to work on some lobster traps. Everything was fine untill the trip back. The O/D light started flashing again. when I would come to a stop, upon take off the same winding out in 1st and 2nd with the hard shift still happens. If I shut off the O/D it shifts fine. I'm not stupid machanically but I just am at the end of my rope and I need my truck. Any more advice would be appreciated. I really don't want to pay the Ford dealer 6 or 7 hundred dollars to change a sensor.
At this point it may not be a sensor. When ever the trans senses slippage or overheating it go into "Limp-in-mode". The line pressure is increased (hard shifts) and the shift timing gets out of wack. Take it to a trans shop and have it scanned for tranny codes. Most will do it for free. It may just a sensor or solenoid hanging up. It may be the coverter is slipping but it's usually something you will feel. Sorry I can't give you any better news.
BTW: Do you have a trans temp gage? You really should get one.
Have you installed a larger trans cooler? You really should get one.
What does the fluid look ans smell like?
One other thing that occurs to me is about two years ago I was crusing down the x-way and the serpentine belt came off due to a bad belt tensioner. The belt wraped around the transmission line going into the radiator and bent the line pretty good. I just bent it back and never thought anything about it. The truck worked fine up untill now. I just checked it and its bent as if you took a brake line and bent it in half and then bent it back. I guess since I didn't have any problems for a couple of years this couldn't be the problem. I'll take it to the shop tomorrow. Thanks for the help.
That could be a problem, trans may have been running hot all that time and now with a little wear on the internals, it's getting even hotter. The TFT (tran fluid temp) sensor will make the trans do what yours is doing if it's indeed running hot. Get a bigger cooler and fix the cooler lines, see if that helps. It something that you should do anyway.
