4x2 payload and 4x4 payload

Why is the 4x2 payload higher than a 4x4?

A 4x4 carries a bit of extra weight on it by its nature....front axle, front driveshaft, and transfer case. As the chassis/platforms are rated for the same overall weight, the extra weight gets pulled off of the available payload.
