I recently went through my fathers 2001 superduty 4x4 front end, replacing seals u-joints and ball joints. At the tail end of the job I reinstalled the hubs, inserted the retianing wires/clips - tires and called it a day. The following morning I went for a test drive. the driverside hub went about a half mile before bailing on me.This was not expected nor safe, even at a modist 20 mph. on the way back the passenger side went . It seemed to sound a bit like a walnut popping on the side of the road.Poor assembly of retainers? I also might add I greased the splines pretty good when I assembled the hubs. Im thinking thats my trouble. I do not believe the axels or seals are installed improperly.I measured both sides for seal placement before diasembly, And replaced to same dimensions. If any body could set me strait on why this could be happening, I would greatly appriciate it. thanks!
i just replaced them on my 2001. I THOUGHT i had the first one in .. grabbed the hub and wiggled and the ring popped right out.
I realized once the hub is in, you need to pop it with the heel of your hand to get the o-ring seated well, and get it all the way in, so the retaining ring could get into it's groove. Once i did that the ring was WELL secured in its spot.
Thanks! I' going to clean up the groove with a wire brush and have another go at it. maybee this time up on blocks to be safe. This trucks supposed to go 600 miles north to the U.P tomorrow if I can git it right.
cool my e mail address is burnthead91@yahoo.com. I just pulled 12 hour midnight shift and about to run to the hardware store so I'll be thin till around noon anyway.
I found the problem all right. I used your insight into the gentile persuation method. I haden't got the hubs in far enough for the retainers to seat properly. A nice tap with a rawhide hammer did the trick. Speaking of trick, the hubs had gone in enough the first time to fool me.I guess anybody who hasent had there hubs in or out in a few years and reads this should heed the advice. those auto hubs cost new about what the bearing/ hub assembly runs. Althow these were seized beoned working free I found a decent pair on ebay for $130 with shipping. On to early 1999 2wd 7.3 maintanace Thanks!
