Front end binding/popping

Just bought a 99 F250 CCSB 4x4 7.3 with 350K on it. has 8" lift, 37's on 18s. while looking it over I noticed the driver side axle/u-joint has lots of slack. not the joint itself but whatever keeps it tight to the hub assembly. driving it home after going over 30mph was a nightmare. every bridge bump made a terrible binding/grinding noise coming from what sounds like the front left wheel. dust seal is just riding on the axle shaft too, I assume it doesnt hold gear oil in.

the previous owner was oblivious to SFA and left the hubs locked in for years. before driving it I unlocked the hubs. never drove it with them locked.

Before I spend $200+ on a hub assembly, does this sound like my problem or will I need the hub and the locking part?

I'd rebuild the front end. New u-joints, ball joints, hub bearings, and anything else I see it needed while apart. With the hubs locked in forever I can imagine some stuff on the inside can be all tore up. Only way to know what you need for sure is to tear it apart and look.

I would go with snowseeker on this one. These trucks are hard enough on the front end stock, if it has a big lift and tires plus that many miles I am sure the front end is trashed. Big tires and a worn out front end is bad news, I remember that all to well from my first truck.

I'm betting the reason the PO had the hubs locked is because it does cut down on the noise of bad hub bearings. My truck's PO had 'em locked too, and I'm sure it was so I wouldn't notice that the bearings were trashed. My truck had 36" Swampers with no lift or level, so I bought it expecting to rebuild the front end.

What is the build date of your 99?

Its a late 99. 5 of 1999. I see a hub assembly online that "should" fit for $100 but the one that I can get thru my dealer at work is $210 and it is local to where I can return it if its not the right one.
I do not plan on keeping the truck long so longevity of the hub is not a factor. truck seems to be non ABS and I dont even see the vacuum lines that are supposed to be routed to the hub.
Where should I get my hub?

thanks
