Thats scary now lol, i never had my alpine needing service, its always worked fine for me.
I had the CVA-1003 flip out screen(which the model has long since been replaced, last I looked it was CVA-1004, but that could have changed by now), I was thinking about one of the other two models as this one was just the entry level one, but it was the only one at the time that they had that was XM ready. Well, 6 months later it wouldn't open, so I send it back out to Cali. and after 5 glorious months of always calling(bout every other day past the 2nd week after I sent it) I get a replacement radio. I might add during this time I had nothing in the truck except my own "singing" to keep me entertained during that time as there was only a big gaping hole were once my radio was. Once again 6 months later(almost to the day I might add, it was close to a wk off), it goes out(same problem wouldn't open) and at that point I just got a regular headunit and Alpine's little screen and mounted that and it worked fine. No issues with the Kenwood I have now, but since I have the music keg, I really don't have much call to use the slot in the radio itself(maybe 5 times out of 2 yrs I used it).
I've been out of the car stereo game for a bit, but still like good tunes, so here's how I'd go at it:
Pioneer, Kenwood, Clarion, or Alpine deck - pick your features, you'll get the quality. Sony has always been lots of flash & features, Jensen...nope.
Speakers: Have some quality adapters made and put 6 1/2" speakers all around. Ever throw a pebble in a pond? what's the shape of the rings? Not oval I'm betting..
They're pricey but I've got some Diamond Audio speakers waiting for me to get time to install. 6 1/2" components up front, and an 8" sub for behind the CC seat. Get some good, clean power to them and you'll be in heaven.
BIG THING: Dyanamat as much as you can!! Oh, but not the dash or windows...hahaha. Seriously, kill the excess vibes & road noise and you'll be amazed at the "free audio horsepower" you'll find.
My 6x8's suck. I can't get new ones right now(new bumper), so i get to stick with them for a little longer now. One day Ill have a nice sound system in this truck, but its gotta run good first lol.
Should i dynamat before i do the system, or while im doing it, and then just run all the cables under the carpet easily? I'm sure that way i'd have alot more space to run stuff.

Pull everything out of the way that you can, scuff the metal up some (doesn't need much, if any, but why not be thorough?), and put your Dynamat down first. DO NOT put your wires under it!! Just think about what a pain it would be to swap/change/fix a wiring issue...
How ironic, that's the set i was mentioning. I'll go ahead and get them. Any sub and Amp recommendations? My buddy had a single 10" at his field party last night in his ext.cab and it sounded more than enough for me, and he said it wasn't but on 1/2 the capable power. So im thinking going with a single 12 in a box that will fit behind the seat.. again any recommendations to where and what to buy? How about speakers for the rear, do i need them? Sorry for the questions, i just want to do it right.
12" subs will go deeper, sure... but how good is your hearing? and how much road noise is there? and from your stacks? I used to sell car stereo and had a pair of 8" JBL subs in a custom box that put 12's to shame. Deeper, cleaner, and NO RATTLE.
I'd go with a single 8" or 10" sub from either Kicker or Diamond Audio. You'll save space, and if you go by a shop that builds boxes and they have an 8" DA sub setup.... you won't know it's an 8" until you see it.
Pick the right components. Anyone that says you "need" 12's must be compensating for something...
Well sinc eit seems that his thread has captured the attention of all the stereo buffs....where can I get a double DIN unit, (Yes mine will take a double din. I have a standard Kenwood and a CB radio in the dash.), What I am looking for is a douible DIN unit, DVD, NAv, Sattelite, etc that the screen FLIPS around to look like a blank plate. I have had too many units stolen and I want this to look as plain as possible. Now I am talking about a FULL SCREEN the flips around, not one of those that the screen comes out of the unit unless it is a touch screen and the face of the head unit comes off for security.
I just put a new sound system in my truck and i love it, sounds plenty loud and the sub hits hard and its only a 10" kenwood. Check my gallery for all of the componets, will get pics later this week
THe Pioneer 6x8 4 way speakers sound plenty clear and loud, nice highs and mids for about 120 a pair
How many channel Amp do i need? What does one, two, four channels designate?
Also, what does "x"-way on a speaker mean? I was looking at 4 way speakers mentioned below.
I want either two 8's or two 10's in a box behind the rear seat. I'd like to replace all four speakers with Pioneer TS-A6881R, they fit perfectly and are reasonably priced, and their description looks good. So with four speakers and two subs, what do i need? Any preferable amp out there?
The speakers are rated 50w RMS (whats RMS?) and 260w peak power. Thanks again sorry to bother

RMS is the rated power that, in this case speaker, can handle continously. For 2 10" subs, I would have a 2 channel bridged amp. that should give you more then enough. I do like my alpine amp, although I'm surprised it's still kickin after 4 yrs.
