(Another) Brake Controller Question, Prodigy or P3?

Reading on brakecontroller.com site about the P3 model by Tekonsha, seems like the new version of the Prodigy, both proportional but display is little more straight forward. Anyone using this one yet? I need to order one in next day or so, just wondering. Differences seem to be mostly in the user interface and the newer P3 switches from elec to hydraulic trailer brakes. The description I read did not say the P3 works in reverse, but probably does.(?) About $30 difference and both use the "direct" wire harness option.

Thanks for any feedback.

2005X,

I have towed over 11,000 miles last season and this with my Prodigy v2.6. I am VERY pleased with its performance.

Having said that...if I were in the market today for a controller I would likely go P3 and here's why.

I don't give a ratz butt about display hype. My simple Prodigy output tells me all I want to know EXCEPT for CURRENT output. You see...if you happen to have a magnet going bad or a wire to one brake (not the first in the daisy chain) break...you will likely not know it immediately unless you notice longer stopping distances. The Prodigy will STILL put out VOLTAGE needed and display said.

However the CURRENT output would be reduced due to the above condition since it didn't have to drive that or those magnets. On the P3, it displays CURRENT. So if you know what your 'nominal' current output is under normal braking, if the condition of an open magnet or weak magnet as described above begins to occur and you start to see LOWER current output...you would know that something is up and investigate.

Voltage ALONE would NOT dip unless you had to drive TOO much current as in a short (Ohms law applies here).

So if I had to do it TODAY...I would likely go P3 for this one feature alone. Both have a $20 rebate on them right now and I'm told there is an Ebay seller selling the P3's for $130 plus $12 shipping and you get the $20 rebate...not too bad actually.

Hope I answered some of your questions.

joe.

Thanks, that's a good reason to spend the extra $30 or so and better than anything explained on the sites I've found so far. My particular trailer I bought has not had the brakes used for a couple years since the last owner pulled it only short distances with a dually and didn't have a controller. Sooo, hoping they work ok, will probably have it checked out this Fall anyway, but once I know the brakes are all working will have that baseline current figure.

But don't see that $20 mail rebate on the P3, only the Prodigy and Primus models, will check their site directly. Thanks for the info.

Prodigy P3 and I love it works great with my 13,000 toy hauler. When I first hitch up to the trailer it told me I had a short some where. It turned out to be two wire riped out of the brake harnes and were touching to axle,

Prodigy and P3 are both great. I have the P3, my dad has the Prodigy. I just like the larger screen and more straightforward display on the P3. Also you can change backlight colors on the LCD screen.....so worth it.

I only paid $160 for my P3 and then I got an extra $20 mainl-in rebate so it wasn't much more than the Prodigy.

Did you purchase online or locally to get the rebate? The sites I have found link a rebate form for the Prodigy or Primus both by Tekonsha, but not the P3. Thanks!

Try this...

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/P3-Brake-Control-Tekonsha-90195-Prodigy-Upgrade-NEW_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ50072QQihZ002QQitem Z120153414287QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW

They say the rebate comes in the box...even includes a photo of the rebate form on the page!!! $130 plus $12 shipping isn't too bad from the prices I have seen.

Thanks for all the help, now little confused at which harness goes with the Xcursion - they have one for 2005+ Super Duty but the techline says with Excursion to use the "regular Ford" harness number TE3035- does this sound right? Would have thought it would be the Super Duty, but then the X-box was not changed with the SD trucks so guess it makes sense.
Thanks, new toy to look forward to...

The Ex did NOT get a new plug with the later model SD's. It is VERY confusing for sure...Ford did NOT change a thing for the last year Ex...so use the "regular Ford" harness and you will be fine...in fact I bought one from U-Haul that stated 1999-2000 Ex and the guy let me plug it in before I bought...guess what...FIT FINE!

I bought it from a local store.

The rebate sticker was plastered on the front of the box and the rebate info was inside.
