I have an '05 and programmed and extra pair of keys I got off Ebay - the earlier post about programming them all at the same time doesn't seem correct however. You don't need the two original keys either to program more, just 2 that are keyed to that vehicle. I programmed my new spares with a stock key and an aftermarket and all 4 work fine. Remember, you're programming the *truck*, not the keys. The keys have an I.D. that the truck reads - you are programming the truck to accept new keys up to the 8 allowed. Just remember to get a 3rd spare programmed before you loose one of the 2 you already should have - If you only have 2 and loose one then you have to do the dealer thing and spend $$$. Get a couple of extras off ebay and do it yourself quick and cheap!
I've always had only one key.. i know big ooops if I ever lose one. The locksmiths say they can program the truck using only my one original pats key.. True or not?
i just bought my truck from a dealership and they only had one key. i ordered two replacement keys online. the only down fall is that i was told that to have the vehicle programmed you need to have 2 keys that are already for the truck. i was told that i need to take it to the dealership to have programmed. what is it that they do that i cant do. do they turn the key an extra time or what?
They hook it up to the computer. By need 2 keys it makes it harder for copy and program a key, thief, ex-wife people like that. As far as programing the keys to the truck is right, but you still need all of the keys to be programmed. If you loose a key and buy one to replace it the lost key will no longer work. It is done that way os that the finder can't take the truck.
In answer to the folks with one key - the dealer or a properly equipped locksmith can program more with only one key, but they charge $$ for it. As for doing it yourself for free, you have to have *any* two programmed keys for the truck to allow you to make more. If you buy from a dealer and they only give you one key, you should make them supply you with a spare as part of the deal - make loud noises and they will cough one up. As far as what "benningstspeed1.0" said about the "lost" key not working anymore - I have never read anything about this and the truck can't "know" the key is lost and there's no way to disable the computer's acceptance of a given key that has been programmed to the truck (except maybe by a dealer). As far as my info goes and my own experience has supported, you can continue to program new keys to the truck up to 8 total and *you do not have to do all at the same time* - once you have programmed a total of 8 then you can't program any more. The dealer may be able to reset that, however.

I think he's referring to the original 2-factory keys that you rec'v at delivery. If you had.. for example... 3-keys and loose one. The two that are already programmed will still work to program a replacement. But you Cannot use a single "original" key and make a second. The PATS program (at least mine) Erases the previous key info on the original set-on the PATs module/PCM. Then programs another 2 (3,4..6) keys w/the new info.
Once a key is programmed its programmed until someone hooks up the tool to clear all of the keys. Using the onboard programming with multiple existing keys doesnt delete anything nor does pats auto delete keys. It merely stores the id of that key.
You can have up to 8 keys programmed depending on the year and they do not have to be done at one time.
At my lockshop we charge 30-40 for the key depending on the year and 35 for the programming if we have to hook up the programmer.
When I bought a blank and had it cut at the F dealership, I had two keys with me, he said if only 1 key, its $150 for the reprogram deal. (And they wouldnt sell me a blank with only 1 key).

Thats normal for a dealership which is why we charge what we do.
I just bought my '06 Lariat and it had only 1 key. I found www.streetkeys.com. You can buy the blanks (at about half the price the dealer or a local locksmith will charge - $16 vs $30+ from the dealer.) From them you can also purchase the needed programming. One package offers the locksmith coming to your location, the other you go to the locksmith. When our key blanks arrive (USPS Priority) the package includes the name and contact info of the local locksmith. You simply call and make an appointment. Street keys send them a workorder and pay the locksmith. Worked for me without a hitch and the locksmith confirmed it was smarter to buy the blanks online - they were cheaper than he or the dealer could offer.
In the end I was able to get 2 keys and have them programmed for what it would have cost to do only 1 at the dealership.
