PATS Key

Do you need two original keys to make a third copy? I bought a third key for a spare and plan to program it. Is it necessary to save originals and drive with the third key, or will the the newly programmed key function as an original, in the event that I lose one, and need to re program another at a later date?

I believe the instructions are in the manual. Yes you need the original 2 keys if I recall correctly. Or you can get them programed by a locksmith or the dealer.

as black04lariat said, yes you need 2. otherwise the dealer or locksmith like to charge a bit to program it. it is very easy to program the new one.... just put one key in the ignition, turn it on (dont start) for a few seconds. Then turn off, remove key, and do the same with the second original key. when you take the second key out, just place the brand new key in the ignition, and turn it on as well. when you turn it off, you should be all set with all keys. this takes less than a minute to perform.

Question

I bought two extra keys, and programed them. I got the idea from somewhere, that I could only have a total of 4 programmed keys, including the original 2. I was at a Ford dealer yesterday, and mentioned this, and was informed that I can have 8 total, before the earlier ones are kicked out! Can anyone confirm or deny this?

yes, you can have up to 8, but they must all be programmed at the same time. so, for example, if you have 4 keys that work, and then try to add 4 more, but forget to re-add 2 of the original working keys, then you will only have 6 that work. those other 2 wont work, even though they originally did. once you enter the programming mode, the pcm will only remember what you add at that time, and dump the rest. hope this helps.

Okay, I think I follow you. If I would want more keys (8 altogether), then I should reprogram "all of them" (4 new, and 2 old) at the same time, using two older ones to reprogram with? Am I correct with that now?

yes, they all have to be done at the same time, or the pcm will only allow the ones that you do this particular time. so, just do all that you want, and you are all set.

Yes... it going to be a dealer or well equipped locksmith. I've heard prices range anywhere from 70bux (w/o spare key) to $130 including new key.

I bought my truck recently. It is a 2005 SuperCrew XLT. Foolish Dealership tried to pass off one security key and one non security key. After reading this forum, I learned what Trigger is saying, so I marched back in and demanded another security key (and programming) at their cost.
As part of the deal they installed a remote starter, and that second key worked in the ignition ONLY if you started the truck with the remote starter. Salesman tried to use that as an excuse.... I don't think so!

the reason it worked with the remote starter and not on its own is because the starter has a PATS bypass module so the engine will start without a key. so, the secuity key is not needed to start the truck... but, with my remote starter (crimestopper), it disables the bypass module once i put in a key and press the brake, so if i had an uncoded key, it would stall.... im not sure why yours doesnt do that.

Mine is a code alarm starter and I just checked it to make sure, the non security key works in the ignition after you use remote starter. I put foot on brake and drove it out of the garage and backed it back in... no stalling.

thats interesting to hear... seems to me that the remote starter maintains the extra bypass module even after the remote starter is "taken off line" by turning the key. i wouldnt like that... someone could get a copy of your key, and then wait for you to remote start it, and then steal it with a simple cut key. i know it sounds far fetched, but i guess always possible.

I just had the dealer program a key today. I lost 1 key and only had 1 key left. A little shopping on eBay and I got a brand new OEM Ford PATS key for $12 shipped

the dealership charged me $48 for 1/2 hour of work to reprogram. Now I'm going to get another key off eBay and program a third one myself

I just bought my 06 SCAB with only one key.

I bought 2 on ebay for 9.99 each.

I took the to the dealer to cut and program......$69.95 plus tax about $75. No charge to cut the keys (right... )

The other (closer) dealer wanted about $90-95 to program.

I plan on finding a couple of more keys for spares to make sure I never have to do this again.
