i cracked m windshield in my excursion the other day and my insurance co said that its covered under my comprehensive coverage--$500 deductable......i called my local company called SAFELITE. they quoted me $216. installed. i was also told that the excursion one is more $$ than the sd one. it has to do something with the location of the rear view mirror. its lower in the excursion.. anyone have gotten a lower price than that?

$216 is a good price... BUT dont let them sell you their "SGC" brand, its one of the worst. Where your mirror bracket is on a SGC, wont matter since it will fall off anyways. Sorry to bash but thats the last company I would use.
The Excursion glass is a little more but you can install a Super Duty window if you want. I have one in mine, I just removed the plastic wire cover to the mirror and adjusted it lower. (I got it free)
AGR stands for Aftermarket Glass Replacement. The best and only way to tell if you are getting OEM quality is to compare the monogram / logo that is printed normaly in one of the bottom corners of the glass. The OEM as others have mentioned, have Carlite printed in the logo for Ford and Mercury. Some older models may still have Pilkington or LOF printed on them, as we did not start printing Carlite logos until about 1995. An AGR version will have the Carlite blocked out and normally have the name of the company's logo such as Pilkington. Still in most cases the OEM company makes the same glass as we do at Pilkington. We print Carlite, GM, Nissan, Toyota, Chrysler, Dodge, or what ever other brand on the logo for glass being sent to the auto maker. We will delete their logo and put ours on if it is being sent to aftermarket replacement. This takes liability away from the automakers since they never actualy get to inspect and approve of the quality.
Pilkington is making the Carlite, Safeguard, etc. glass?
Weve got crates of Carlite, Pilkington, and Guardian of course, glass. Is the Carlite more because it is being sold from Carlite as a middle man? Does Carlite manufacture their own?
I see many of the new Fords are coming with glass stamped "Ford Motor Company PPG"
When I bought my truck a few months ago, on the way home, at mile 4, I got a busted windshield from a rock. I called the dealer and they referred me to a local glass company. They didn't have the Carlite in stock and I didn't want to wait 3-4 days plus the logo isn't that important to me, so I went with what they had. I looked on the glass and the only markings are listed below. Did I get ripped off?

Does Carlite make glass without the logo? That would be ideal.
PPG is good quality, some PPG glass has some wave across the top of Super Dutys and E-series, other than that its good.
If you want a cheaper Carlite without the Super Duty logo, just order one for a 2002.
Edit: DW1551 I believe is a F150, so... no, there is not a Carlite without the logo.

From what I understand Carlite does still make glass, but it is the competitive way to out sourse, so they do not make much glass anymore. We make a lot of glass for Carlite and ship it to them, and then they distribute as they need. I would guess this is the cost difference for the "middleman".
The monogram logo such as the "Ford Motor Company PPG" is determined by the design engineers at Ford or the other automakers, and recently many of the Logos have started changing. I do not know the reason behind the changes though.
I have seen several of the '05 Super duties including mine with a "PILKINGTON" only logo on the winshield, which I think is strange.
Hey RCKYMNT-PSD, Do you ever feel like we highjacked the post. LOL

In terms of insurance coverage, things like deductibles for auto glass is determined by several things, and will vary from insurance company to insurance company. Also, every state has its own set of insurance guidelines, and all insurance comanies within the state have to follow those guidelines, which can dictate things like "minimum coverage options" for various types of damage. Better companies will do better than these minimums, but will often charge for it. Some companies won't offer anything better than the minimum required. Then there are things like "specially negotiated deals" between insurance companies and financial institutions, places of employment, etc.
All-in-all, you have to question your comapny closely about glass coverage issues if you want to get the most coverage possible. Then, you have to pay attention to "changes in coverage" whenever you renew your policy every year. Otherwise, when you need the coverage, you may not have it like you thought you did.
Parts and services are the biggest money makers out there and windshields are no exception. I lived in Pittsburgh for 7 years and all of the windshield peopled would "pay your deductible" when you got a replacement. What do you think that means? Anyhow, I've got the same A post to A post crack that Fat Diesel has and need to get it replaced before inspection comes due in September. The biggest concern is whether they do the work properly. I had that one replaced for 'free' and it leaked at about 6 months for 3 years until I traded it last fall.
Thank goodness for 100% glass coverage! Sorry for those who don't have it.
i have state farm insurance and it used to be covered. now its the deductable thing. for some reason the excursion windshield was more money than a sd windshield. the difference is the sd logo and the placement of the rear view mirror. its lower on the X. i replaced mine with a factory carlite for $215. a barand x was even cheaper. same day service was cheaper than if i scheduled an apt.
