some hondas don't use egr either. the reason is because you can get the same effect with the cam. if you get the right overlap on the cam it will leave exhuast in the cylinder, doing the same thing as an egr. they do this with the ivtec system. the system can control the cam timing. only the 5.3l gets way better gas mileage than the 4.6/5.4. it has cylinder management. it can shut off 4 cylinders when at a steady speed. the highway mpg is really good, but it is just as bad in town.

newb question, but i just do not understand how taking hot exhaust gas and feeding it into the intake valve on a combustion chamber will lower the combustion chamber temps? wouldn't using cool air from the atmosphere be a better solution?

what is required for a GAS engine to ignite? 3 simple things: oxygen, an ignition source (spark), and some kind of a fuel source (gasoline).

correct me if im wrong, but wont reusing exhaust gas (mixed with normal air) not produce as much energy or be as volitile as using pure oxygen mixed with the fuel? so as far as im looking at this, more power will be created and be able to burn more efficently using clean, air.

Reusing exhaust gas does cool the combustion process down. The EGR is there to lower the PEAK combustion temperatures. This reduces the formation of NOx, oxides of nitrogen, which cause smog and asthma.

could i just build myself a set of headers and have much less back pressure allowing the exhaust to escape quickly and easier? I'm building a machine built for wheelin some trails and want the engine to be as reliable as it could be, just having the utmost basic engine controls for it run and run with as much power as it can.

There's two ways to lower combustion temps 1 is the egr while adding less fuel (lean)to keep ping under control and 2 is to add more fuel to run richer like at wot. More fuel=lower combustion temps and less mpg. Like at wot.
