First day i had it i got stuck in sand and it wasnt wet. Now i can roast the crap out of the tires and i live in arkansas so no emissions.
so how much mileage do you exspect out of a truck like this if driven right
i have the tach problem need a remedy stays about 4000 all the time even when not running
need to find the fuse link in ignition cause it just stoped working
just put $150 in tune up new shocks and bushings in the back steering arms
Also how can you tell which transmission is in it
am i wrong i was told by parts store guy there where 2 5sp trannys that went to this truck a mazda and a Mitsubishi and what fluid do i have to use
and the only reason i got this truck cause my mazda MX-6 is going to the grave cause of a smoking problem
thanks
but your kinda to late i all ready checked the FAQ on them and it doesn't have the the detachable bell housing so i know it takes ATF
but thanks for your response
In 91, your ranger should have the M50D manual tranny.
I hate to nit-pick, but the term "M5OD" gets tossed around all the time, and it doesn't mean anything. This does not tell you if it is a Mitsubishi or a Mazda trans. The first takes gear oil while the later takes ATF (Dex/Mer III), and they are both:
Manual 5 speed Over Drive
The best check is a visual inspection like jacx did, plus looking for the tag on the side of the case.
Correct, the only engine that still used a Mitsubishi transmission in '91 was the 2.9l, so your good with ATF. You asked mileage, do you mean before you wear it out, or MPG? You should get at least 22-up, depending on city/highway miles. I get 25+ with my '92, mostly highway. Total miles, who knows, there are few engines tougher than the 2.3l, just keep the RPM's below redline, and keep the oil clean, you'll wear the body out first. Have you inspected the timing belt yet? You'll cuss the truck if that breaks, replace if there is any sign of checking or seperation at all. Tell us a bit more about this $400 truck, it sounds like you got a great deal!
Edit: G21C_Wraith, though you are technically correct, there is still a small bit of validity to using those call letters to specify the Mazda trans. The Toyo Kogyo transmissions almost always get referred to as the TK series, the Mitsubishi transmissions use their FM series numbers to identify them, the Mazda is the only trans I ever see referred to with the M5OD designation, and the only one that bears that designation on the factory tag.

IDK about 91' being any different, but yes the Mitsubishi trans will have a tag that says something like "FM146" + a detachable bell housing, but this trans was also used through out the years behind the 2.3L also. Obviously not the same bell housing, but the same trans. To the best of my limited knowledge these were usually 4x4, but there were also 4x2 trucks that came with a "dummy" transfer case. I know the Toyo came in some trucks, although I have never seen the tag on one. As for the Mazda trans that I have seen, all of them had the same type code as listed in the manual: "E87A-FE" (others have had something similar), plus it has the one piece housing. I have never seen the generic code "M5OD" printed on the tags. That doesn't mean it doesn't exist just because I have never seen it, but you can understand where there can be some confusion if someone is not specific about which trans you have.
I second the info on the $400 deal. I would love to find a cheap 91' or 92' Ranger s-cab, with a good interior and the rest can be wrecked or blown engine. I just want the truck for some parts, and the interior.
well as far as ive dove in to the truck i can tell it has been under water before but just looking at you cant tell there is a hell of a lot of mild corrosion under the dash.
No Passenger window and a beat up drivers fender
Crappy paint job pealing
My brother got a job at a dodge dealer so i can get the ball joints put in for free
im thinking about getting another one and putting in a GT40 motor in it found one with a mustang attached to it for $650 needs wired.
Sounds like $400 was about right then, floaters can be a lot of trouble, I hope it serves you well. In any case, your drivetrane is bulletproof, so still well worth the $400. Wraith, IDK if the Mazda actually says M5OD either come to think of it. I just had the trans out of my '92, I shoulda looked! In any case, it is confusing, especially when my lousy Haynes manual calls the Toyo Kogyo a Mazda also, grrrrr.
I have an '87 with the 2.3 and have indeed "wore out the body before I wore out the motor". with regular maintenance you should get many years of good service out of yours.
