It seems that Ford used 2 differnt manual trannies in the explorer of this vintage, one was a mitsubishi, the other was Mazda, I need to top it off as I have a leak at the extension housing, how can I identify which tranny it has, my understanding is that Mitsubishi uses 80W gear oil; and Mazada uses ATF, it looks like it's leaking gear oil, but everything in the owners manual says its a Mazda, but shouldent it leak ATF, the door code indicates its a M style tranny, I know that MO signifies MAZDA, but I can find no other refrence to the Mitsubish, anybody got any ideas
The only reference to a manaul trans in your Explorer I can find says it has the Mazda M5OD . I assume its a 4WD ? The extension housing seal is very easy to replace , pry the old one out & tap in the new , about $20 from Ford .
