Transmission pan problem

Some of the bolt holes on my trans where the pan bolts to have become stripped out. There are 4 bolts in total not even there. I was thinking I could tap them to a bigger size and put larger bolts in there. What size should I go to? Or is there a better solution? I need to get this done this weekend. Its leaking fluid from the gasket. Also will be a good time to install my superduty transmission pan.

you can install a helicoil, the exact size i'm not sure of off hand, a quick flatrate fix is a sheet metal screw and antisieze

So you guys are saying I can put helicoils in them and the same bolts will fit back in? With no drilling?

the helicoil requires drilling other than that yes the same bolt can reused and the threads will be stronger than when it was new

The pan bolt size should be either M8x1.25 or M6x1. You should be able to go to your local parts store and get a helicoil kit. It will come with directions and tell you what size drill you will need. Absolutely do not use sheet metal screws.

Sorry coonhunterjoe, I got to fix a cobble job like that at work this last week. If people would just take the extra five minutes and do it right.

Well I got some helicoils, m6x1 tonight and got the all the stripping pan bolt back in. Those things are amazing, wish I had known about the longer. But I still have a few drips coming from the gasket. Im starting to think thats my problem. Im using the rubber reusable one with my 4r100 pan. Anyone else have issues with it. I never had leaks in the past with the old style.

Your pan may be warped from over tightening the bolts before.

is it leaking at the rear of the pan? I had one that I thought was the pan but it ended up being the rear housing was leaking right where that parting line meets the pan.

Make sure that the heli coils are in all of the way. If they are sticking out a little bit, they will not allow the gasket to seal all of the way. The end of the heli coil should be at least one thread beyond flush.
