Question Mushy Brakes!!!

Hi, I'm new to the forum. I just got a '97 Diesel F-250 4x4 with 230K miles on it. Runs real good, but does not stop so good! It has ABS.

It has rear drums and one of the hub seals was leaking, so I went all out and replaced the pads, seals and bearings. With this many miles it seemed prudent.

The pedal goes 3/4 to the floor before it stops and a panic stop is out of the question.

I replaced the master cylinder and bled the system real good but the pedal is still mushy. Kinda like stepping on a plum. It never gets to a hard stop on the pedal.

Any ideas?

Sounds like there is still air in the system. Does the pedal bleed down while held at a moderate pressure? If so that is a sign of a bad master cylinder. Check the vacuum line that comes from the vacuum pump to the booster. It may have a bad seal. Although I doubt that would be it because it would be hard to push. Makes me wonder if the booster is going bad. Check the front brakes also to be sure. You may also want to double check the rears to be sure there is nothing that fell off or moved after you reinstalled them.

Welcome the FTE you will learn lots here but beware we like spending your money on PMS (Powerstroke Mod Syndrome)

Good point Tim I guess I assumed they were already adjusted. You can probably adjust them with a brake spoon or screwdriver. If they don't need much adjustment you can just back up in reverse and step on the brakes several times, this may take a while to do if they are way out.

Thanks Guys,

The rear brakes are adjusted tight.

One last symptom is the pedal has a slight pulse in it.

I assume the pulse is when the brakes are applied? If so then your front brakes may be bad and have a warped rotor. I wonder if the vacuum pump will cause pulses. Anybody know?

check and make sure all your wheel bearings are tight.
also check to see if you maybe have a warped drum or rotor that is pushing the pads away while driving and then you have to pump them back up when you want to stop. (thats how my truck has been for about a month now, ill fix it one day.... )

Did you bench bleed the new master cylinder before it was installed?

When you bled the brakes, did you get good flow out of the bleeders?

Check your rubber hoses front and rear for deterioration. They could even have a flap formed inside the hoses and are tough to diagnose if the flap is partially blocking the fluid flow instead of totally blocking it. With 230K on the odometer I would just replace them to be sure.

Welcome to FTE , if you hang around here long enough we'll help you spend all your $$ on mods. j/k
