loss of power under trailer load

just bought a 99 F250 SD 4 x 4 with the 7.3 turbo diesel. it seemed to run great until I took out for it's first test run with a 6500lb trailer. it was fine for the first 10 miles.(2000rpm @ 70 mph). But on the return trip it seem to lose power by about 40 %.
It was hard to tell if the turbo stopped working, or what, but it took more peddle to get it up to highway speed, and it really struggled to stay at that speed. I did notice a moderate additional humming noise that I had not heard before. It was hard to tell if the noise was coming from the engine, tranny, somewheres else ?. Temp & oil gauges were in the normal range at all times. Fuel is fresh, air filter is new.

I unhooked the trailer and went for another quick drive on the highway, and everything seems fine....lots of power, turbo kicks in...no additional noises..

Trailer is new, brakes are not grabbing.

any ideas on what to check, beyond whats in the manuals, or on this site?

Diesel newby

Mucho appreciated

You need to pull your intercooler tubes off, clean those and the boots throughly with break cleaner. Check the boots for any pin holes or cuts then reinstall. Then pull your rubber intake tube off the turbo inlet and examine the compressor wheel, make sure its not severly worn or chipped.

fuel filter was a little black, but I changed it anyway.... won't be able to test again till next weekend. I doubt that the 7.3 turbo is affected much by driving into the wind...lol
thanks all..I'll let ya know how it goes
