What is the best place to install a trans temp gauge? 97 psd E40D. Right now I have it on the driver's side of the tranny where there was a small plug that came out near the gear selector. I just put in a new ford tranny and the temps went up to 210 today driving in OD at 70mph for a half hour, unloaded in 90 degree heat. This is way too high and I have on a new 26000lbs hayden cooler. What could be the problem, is the gauge in the wrong spot? <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o>
That's where most of the guys here have there gage mounted so I'd say you OK.
210 is too hot IMO, especially for a new tranny but that's just my 2 cents. You should try and verify if the temp gage is accurate. Borrow an Infrared gun and shoot the temps on the tranny lines on the opposite side of the trans.
I agree with Jim. thats too hot and you have the sensor in the right spot. I would bring it back to where you had it installed. they can use a scanner to check the temp and see if your gauge and the temp sender for the PCM are close.
I think your problem is your cooler is still too small for that tranny. I had the OEM cooler on mine after a rebuild and my temps ran high like yours, until I dropped in a Tru-cool. The tru-cool is about twice as long as the 26,000 Hayden cooler. BTW I have my sending unit in the exact same spot as you.
I put the tranny in myself and made sure all the lines were blown out and clear. I am going to try a new cooler setup I cleaned up from the junk jard today after work. The hayden cooler seems like a joke, it is just tubes with fins on it, probably does not do much. Well at least I got the sender unit in the right spot. I will try a heat gun to make sure the gauge is working right, even though it is brand new.
I did not get a temp gun, but I put two ford explorer tranny coolers in line with each other that I got from the junk yard for 20 bucks. I just drove it for an hour and the temps never got 155 degrees. Hopefully this will do the trick when towing.
