exhaust temp?

<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o>
I have a 1993 F-250 with a 7.3L non-turbo. It's stock (for now) and I'm installing a pyro. What kind of reading should I be getting for the exhaust temp?<o></o>
<o></o>
I'm looking at the normal around town readings and pulling 10,000 lb trailer readings. And yes, I'm new diesels. <o></o>

I understand there is a range for the temp. What is a good range to keep it in?

Brojon2002,
Welcome to FTE and the IDI diesel forum.

With the thermocouple in the exhaust manifold, magic number you should never exceed is 1200 degrees.
Pistons start to melt at 1250 degrees.

On a long hard pull 1100 for extended time would be about the max.

I'm looking at putting it on the drivers side manifold. I'm going to also put in a transmission temp at the same time.

The truck is a 2X4 and has 3.55 gears with a auto with OD. It is underpowered for the trailer I have. We were told the truck would tow between 10,000 and 12,000. The trailer is 7,150, loaded it will be about 10,000.

Under heavy load there exhaust is very clean. I was told that under a heavy load it should be putting out some black smoke. We are looking at turning up the IP. I'm not interested in smoking for the fun of it, only if it is needed to get more power out if it.

I’m looking for ideas for helping with those hills.

these trucks were never ment to be fast just to work, they will pull just about anything you put behind them, the wont get there first, but they will always get you there. if you want more power a turbo gives you the most, turbos are good for atleast 50 hp and sometimes more, or if you dont want to spend so much moneyy then you could cut the soup bowl out, make a ram air intake, free flowing exaust, and turn the pump up.

Your right I'm not looking at spending that much money if I can help it. I do not want to get there first; I just want to get there.

What is "cut the soup bowl out"? You must be talking about the air filter housing. I did notice it was very oddly designed.

Do you have pictures of this and what about making a ram-air intake?

I had the exhaust looked at the other day. It is stock, or replaced stock. The muffler will need replaced in a year or so they said. I have noticed people talking about taking off the muffler. Are they talking about running it with out one? Won’t this just make it loud?

Yes cutting the muffler out is the same as running without one. This will give you some noise but some power a the same time. If you don't want the noise run a performance muffler - Flowmaster - Magnaflow. And if you can up the size of the pipe to give you more flow. I turned up my pump and it does smoke but what a diff in power, you just have to watch your pyro close

I put a 3" flowmaster on my 351. I will most likely do the same with this 7.3L.

Running a normally aspirated IDI without a muffler will be very loud. Add a turbo and things change. The turbo cuts down the exhaust noise to the extent that my wife did not notice when I removed the muffler on my truck.

mine has dual 2.5inch pipes run from the manifolds back, then dual flowmasters run into a single 3 inch exit over the rear axle, works good sounds good when i put my foot into it, but quiet at idle, i have my pump turned up ip advanced ram-air soup bowl out and exaust. i start up a 6% grade unloaded in high gear never shift out of it doing 50 mph, put it to the floor and be doing almost 70 when i come over the top

I'm suprised that 6.0 ain't blown up yet. The 6.0 was one of the worst motors Ford ever put in a truck. Totally different from a 6.9 or 7.3 IDI anyways.
