I have a 1991 f-250 with 7.3. The brake pedal is hard. I put a new vacum pump, new booster and a new master cylinder bled the brakes and nothing helped. It feels like I have no power brakes the pedal is hard. Have new rotors on the front and new pads. Anything else I can check?
yes it has vacum i can put my thumb over the hose and it sucks hard
OK, now start it up, and run it for a minuite or so, then shut it down, and wait for another minuite. Now pull the booster hose, there should be an audible hiss as the vacuum is breached, if not, the booster could be leaking.
Another thing to try is to compare how the brakes feel with or without the booster hooked up, a test in the drive way is all you need here (ie, don't actually drive it).
Been there, done that, I have a 1992 F 350,7.3, crew cab, changed Master cyl (1 -1/8"), vac pump, RABS sensor,(rear anti-lock Sensor part near floor and firewall) front calipers and brake rubber hoses, turned rotors, new pads, rear brake cyls, new shoes and kits, and most of the steel brake lines and have bleed the crap out of the system many times. I STILL don't have what I consider decent brakes- I can stand on the pedal with 2 feet, on a gravel road and can't lock any thing up.I have not changed the booster yet.I also get the brake light on sometimes while running up the hwy. ???? I was told by a buddy to run the master cyl. from a F450 a 1-1/4 bore would help! hope you get some answers Mike
fuzz,
With the gauge still connected, press the brake pedal down fully a couple or three times. Check to see how long it takes to rebuild the vacuum. Mine had decent vacuum but took minutes to rebuild after using the brakes. Had to stand on them to get the beast to stop if I was in any kind of in-town traffic. New pump & all's been well for several months on my pickup.
