Hey guys, new to the group and diesels and need some advise. I have an 1992 F-250 with a 7.3 that has 260,000 plus miles on it. I have a small oil leak at the very back of both heads. I cleaned the engine when I first bought the truck and just noticed this leak. The engine runs great and uses no oil and doesn't smoke. These leaks look like they are coming off the valve cover. I'm kind of stumped because the valve covers are dry as a bone on the rest of the engine and only seep at those two spots. Is this a characteristic of this engine at this age and mileage? Thanks
If they're comming from the valve covers, snug the bolts up a little.....A LITTLE, dont hulk up on them, the torque specs on them is below 20 ft lbs.(I dont know for sure)
The bolts have a tendency to back off after a while.
Your problem is characteristic of OHV engines. LOL Never had that problem on any Flathead. You know, the way God created the engine in the beginning. Never saw a diesel flathead though. Might work with 8.5:1 compression and lots of boost. Induct through the block and exhaust thru the intake manifold. Makes you wonder. Probably have to use a 337CI 8EQ or 8EL block. This is crazy thinking I guess, and should probably be on another forum. Anyway forgive me of this crazy thinking.
The torque for valve covers is 6 ftlbs after a while they will squash and retorquing is required. Do check for oil/diesel leaks from the valley pan drain it dumps on the rear of the engine by the oil pressure sender at the back.
Note... I have seen cracks in the valley pan at the rear under the intake manifold also.
