You could also have an obstruction in the tank or feed line to the pump, however if you do not hear the pump running or trying to run, then it is the first place to look.

I may beat on it anyway just to make me feel better.

I know what the pump sounds like when it's running and that sound is not there. As for the friend bringing tools, she did good to go straight up I35 and get off at the right exit. Bringing anything with her is out of the question. I have a simple test light, and some spare wire and alligator clips in the toolbox, so I'm guessing I can turn the key on and check if there's power (or not) to the pump.

BTW, did you know you could hook up jumper cables to the pump connections? It is a 12 volt connection. Just food for thought.

OK, one more question. Autozone's website lists a fuel pump for 160 that looks like the one on my frame rail. Napa lists the one for the frame rail at 211 but also lists an in-tank pump for 359. Does the 02 7.3 have one or two fuel pumps? Should I just be looking at changing the one on the frame rail, with the in tank pump being an after market add on?

My truck is a 2000 f350. It is mounted on the rail. no pump in the tank. there is (was) a mixing unit with 2 filters in the tank. Some put another pump in the tank as a booster pump. I have 188,000 miles on my truck. Recently I started having fuel problems myself. I dropped the tank and found both of the in tank filters totally plugged up. I cleaned them up, and 2 days the fuel pump went out. Thats how come I know so much. Ha Ha... so, maybe when you get home you might want to drop your tank and check your sending unit, thats what the thing is called ( the filters are in it). My truck is a utility bed, so I don't know if the tank is the same though.
i'm getting ready to head off to bed, so, Best of luck tomorrow

Your truck has only one fuel pump, under the driver seat mounted to the frame. I just wanted you to be sure it was the pump. You can direct wire it to any 12v source, including your own batteries to test it. Hence my jumper cable post.
Edit: even a battery charger should power it.

I found the part this morning and a nice person at the hotel who offered to drive me to the store and back. Got the new fuel pump installed. Broke the clip on the rear line because there was not enough clearance to get my disconnect tool in there. Was able to get the little plastic clip that comes with the fuel pump on, and even though it seems loose and doesn't look like it would work, you can't pull the line off with steady pressure by hand and it doesn't seem to leak.
Truck fired up and was able to drive across the street to the hotel for a shower.
We're going to hope this takes care of it. I've got a hose clamp in case the plastic clip fails. Any other suggestions before I get on the road?
