Fuel filter cover "breathing"

My newbie streak may be showing, but I noticed something yesterday when I had my 7.3 PSD idling. I noticed that when the light is just right, the plastic fuel filter cover appears to be "breathing" or flexing in a specific rythym, apparently as the fuel pump is stroking. I could definitely feel it when I put my fingertips on the top. Is this normal? I would tend to think that it might be an indication that the plastic cover is weakening and could develop a crack, or possibly that the filter that is installed may be too tall?

What gives PSD brothers? IS IT ALIVE???

I sometimes think these things ARE alive! It's normal. The fuel pump sends pulses out to the filter. If you have a FP gage, hook it up to the schrader valve on the side of the FPR, (tire valve looking thing). You will see wild swings in pressure from 40 to 80 psi or more. The california trucks have a little different pump with a damper on it to stop those pulse, but it still does it.

Has anyone ever seen the pump cover crack or fail because of the continuous flexing? Seems to me that sort of thing could be disasterous unless you are into big fires.
