what is this ???
I have an Excursion and a toy hauler that weighs over 12k. When I get on the highway and get to about 55-65 mph it jerking like the trany is slipping and there is a muffled popping sound I also noticed that I would blow out small puffs for black smoke when this happens. i thought it was the filter which was an ARIRAID that was clogged up so I pulled it back a little and headed home. The truck was fine all the way home so I clean the filter. My next trip was only a few days latter and the same thing once a gain I pull the filter back so it could breathe and she pulled like a champ. AIRRAID is sending me a new filter I will see if this fixes it for good. If not I guess I will be putting on a new turbo

Based on your symptoms, and what you did to fix the problem each time, I would also say the engine is not getting
enough oxygen. I would have to wonder why the Check Engine light isn't coming on at the same time though.
