This may be off just a little for FTE but if anybody knows ,someone here should know ,I have a 2004 250 SD/CC/PSD/6.0 what is the best trailer brake controller for this model truck,is there a ford product or is there only after market equipment for this model 250/2004, I would like to have the ford dealership Install the brake controller from ford , like the 2006 models have ,is this possible?
The integrated trailer brake control only works with the 2005-up trucks. You had to order it from the facotry that way, or you could add it on later by swapping out master cylinders, adding the controller, and reprogramming the PCM to get it to work.
For a 2004 you will have to go aftermarket. The Tekonsha Prodigy is the most widely recommended that I have seen, and Tekonsha is the one who makes the ford system so they know what they are doing. It is really easy to add the controller so I would suggest doing it yourself. Here is a link to a place where you can buy the controller, and a cable that will plug in directly to it and your truck so you don't even have to splice any wires. The only thing you will have to do is figure out where and how to mount it.
I'm not sure if that is the cheapest place to get them, but I have been told they have excellent customer service. They are also a sponsor here, so ask if they give a discount to FTE members.
I mounted my Prodigy in the cubby hole in the dash which is to the right of my rear slider control. I purchased mine from RV wholesaler in Lakeview, Ohio. They were the cheapest and I also recommend purchasing the wire harness adapter for plug and play.
I upgraded from a Voyager which performed well for 11 years.
I second the motion on the Prodigy. Make sure you check www.brakecontroller.com to compare prices. They usually throw in the direct plug and play harness and maybe ship 2 day for free. Not sure what they are doing right now.
Go with a Tekonsha Prodigy or the P3. I have the P3 the latest and greatest from Tekonsha. I paid $170.00 for my P3 and got a $20 mail-in rebate.
Do yourself a favor and get the ready made wireing harness from Tekonsha, it only runs $10 bucks or so and plugs right into the factory harness with no cutting or soldering.
