I have a 2001 f 250 4X4 with a 5.4L with 135000 miles. I noticed that when I accelerate slowly the truck stutters (especially between 30-60 mph). I have changed recently the fuel filter, air idle control, the mass air flow sensor which has the intake air temp sensor in it. and cleaned the injectors. The truck has non EGR valve. It also shows noengine lights. I am stuck any advice?
This almost sounds like torque converter shudder. Classical symptom is a shuddering under light acceleration between maybe 35 and 60 or so. Depends on gearing and when your lockup clutch engage.
The shudder is due to the lockup clutch slipping. Lockup of the clutch happens after about 35mph at least on my 94 E4OD.
If you accelerate hard the shudder goes away since the clutch unlocks.
Might be worth at least a tranny fluid change. Sometimes this fixes the problems but at least it allows you to inspect the pan and fluid for evidence of wear and tear and or overheating.
If torque shudder continues too long it will damage the tranny and require a rebuild.
Jim thank you for your advice. You are right it is an automatic. I bought the truck with 130000 miles and took it to the local trany shop for a complete service at that time he stated that everything looked good. He even cracked open the filter and said that it was all clean. I will check the fluid and take it back to him for another look, maybe something new has happened since then. Once again thank you for your advice.
If what Jim suggested doesn't solve the problem, look into locating a bad COP (Coil pack). You can buy the coil pack assembly, which is only a coil and boot, for about $50 and change them out until you find the bad one. Or you can take it to your nearest dealer and let them do a diagnostic on it. The diag costs anywhere from $50 to $85 depending on where you are and your PR with the dealer.
Thank you for your reply. I had a diagnostic test run last week and the only thing it showed was bad intake air temp sensor, which I replaced today with no results. The test went through and drop out each of the coils to test it and at that time they were ok. I am going to have another diagnostic test run and see what it says now. Thank you for the reply this web site is great for getting others opion. I have been stuck a while on this problem so thank you for you input.
For every one to know. I found the problem and should have thought of it sooner. When I bought the truck with 130000 miles on it they said they had a complete tune up done. So I hooked to the computers to see what they said. Anyway after all that went back to the basics. Pulled the plugs to find out it appears they have never been replaced after new plugs and wires truck runs grreat again.
