so i just noticed im gett alot of white smoke when i come to a stop light or just in neutral ... it doesnt nessicarly happens when i start the vechile just when im running it doesnt seem to be running and differently or lacking power just getting the white smoke... i did a search and if im not mistaken it stated something about the glow plugs not burning a certian amount of left over fuel ... and i thought the glow plugs only came on during cold conditions ... so if someone could help me out a bit that would be great ... ooh and by the way the service engine light is Not on so its not throughing any codes. thanxs in advance.
The glow plugs are only energized when the motor is cold to help it start. After that they are off so your glow plugs are not the problem if it smokin at a stop light.
You can throw codes without throwing a light, they are called soft codes.

Check your coolant level...is there a sweet odor of the smoke??
ok sorry i haven't been able to get back online ... i had been away from the computer for a few days ... since i was busy i took the truck to the dealer to have them check the truck out to see what they could find out so i dropped it off and out of the blue an old friend of mine calls ... well it turns out he works for the dealer as a diesel mechanic ... which i was not aware of so he tells me that he sees my truck in one of the bays and decides to look up my number and give me a call to find out the reason for my truck being there...he then tells me that its bluish/grey smoke that he sees and that it diffently needs checking out, but he is Not the tech that is scheduled to work on my truck its another guy that he kinda dislikes ...and that guy pulls the truck into the bay walks to the back sees the smoke goes to the front pops the hood opens my oil cap sees smoke closes it back up and takes it out of the bay and then he says "oh it needs a new engine" <---whats up with that im not a mechanic but i really think u need to do much much more in order to come up with that concluision that quick...my friend from the dealer tells me this stuff and im like what the f$#k so he doesnt really check anything and wants to say its the entire engine.... but as my friend doesnt want to get in trouble he tells me to not let them know of our converstation with him about my truck and to take it out of the dealer ship and he will check everything at his house...so this here to me is a perfect example of what kinda krap goes on around a Stealer Ship ...and there estimated amount is $8-9k nice chunk of change huh... and my friend tells me that could be a number of things but will diffently help me out ...but have any of u guys had the same smoke problem and what was ur guys deals....
I had the same problem. White smoke when rolling off the throttle or coming to a stop. Do you notice a puff of white when you start it up as well? My culprit was the turbo needed to be rebuilt. I did quite a bit of research before pulling the turbo, and found several references that all described the same symptoms, all said the turbo is going out. Strange thing was, it wasn't making any noises and made normal boost levels.
Click this picture to see what can happen to the turbo if it's not rebuilt too soon - this is my turbo when I took it apart:
Hopefully your turbo is not already damaged beyond repair. Mine was, and I had to replace it. If it's not damaged, you can rebuild it with a $100 kit off of eBay. It's pretty simple to do as well. I did mine in at home on the bench. My turbine wheel rubbed against the center section as well as the compressor wheel rubbing the compressor housing. Since the turbine wheel is welded to the shaft, it was no longer servicable.
What's likely happened to your turbo is the ring seals around the shaft are either worn badly or missing. That's what's causing the white smoke - oil in the exhaust from the turbine side of the turbo. Look at the 4th picture in the gallery I posted above - the half ring of metal is all that was left of mine. It's supposed to be a full ring that goes in the groove of the shaft next to the wheel. There's one on each side that keeps the oil in the center section of the turbo.
As far as some smoke coming out of the oil fill cap, that's normal. It's a little blow by, and as long as it's not excessive, you shouldn't have a problem.
Check your turbo. Pull of the intake and see if the compressor wheel has any movement to it. It shouldn't move but maybe fractions of an inch, either up/down, side-to-side, or in/out of the center section. If it moves very much at all, stop driving the truck and pull the turbo to rebuild it...hopefully before damage is done that renders it unservicable.
jtharvey ...thanxs for your comment i will diffentaly check that out i just got word of the same thing from one of my brothers friends stating some of the same things ... well i will let you know what happens
Jt, I have a bit of smoke when i first start it, i haven't noticed any at stop lights but really haven't looked for it. Would you still suspect turbo or was there a reason you asked about smoke at start up? Thanks
A brief puff of white oil smoke at startup was the first thing I noticed. I didn't know what it was for sure, and thought it may have been a non-working GP system. Maybe a week or two after that is when I noticed the smoke when rolling to a stop. That's when I knew it wasn't GP related. If I had only checked my turbo shaft play earlier, I may have been able to save my turbo. I was lucky that I had a spare on hand, but it did need a rebuild before it went on the truck.
well i took of the intake and messed with the blades with my finger and had no real play what i kinda noticed though is the back part of the turbo looks a tad bit greasy/oily im not sure if its supposed to be that way ... i was going to take of the exhaust pipe that connects to the back half off to see if oil is not going in through the pipe but it was raining so ill just have to wait and see if that could be my reason ....
None of the outer part of the turbo should be oily. If oil is seeping past a ring seal, it is possible for it to come out between the housing and center section. But, saying that the shaft has no play...well, I'm curious to see what your further investingation comes up with.
here is the best pic i could find Not my turbo but gives you an idea of what seems to be oily again it doesnt look like its pooring out ,but its not dry either ...

and this morning i disconnected the were the exhuast meets on top of the engine and i know its was going to have soot but this soot looks kinda oily and it has sat in the same place for two days so i am wondering if i turn the truck on to see if their is any sign of oil ...this would be a sign of an oring or something correct?
