I can drive only 55!

Please help! I have taken my '87 F150 to the shop twice now and they still can't fix my problem. Going down the road and everything seems fine and then all of a sudden I cannot go over 55 mph. They supposedly checked the tranny and they said since there was no metal in the pan, it shouldn't be that. I was also told that it might be the catalytic converter. Might that be the problem? Any advice would be great.

welcome to FTE

You don't say how many miles are on the cat but a clogged cat will cause the truck to run poorly. If possible.......remove it or disconnect the input end and put a test pipe in or run without it to see if it's the culprit.

Why would you have the trans checked..........Does the motor rev up high and you just don't get anymore speed? Trans slipping and low fluid would normally show up at low speeds too, specially on initial takeoff. Revving high and going slow.

One more possibility is your fuel filter.......Usually a clogged and dirty filter will shut the truck down completely but it is possible it could be just slowing the fuel down.

Others will chip in more ideas......hang in there.

Good Luck
Bob

It could be you fuel injecters(If so equipped). Try a can of Berrymans carb cleaner(Walmart about $3.00) pour it in a full tank of gas. It works great on mine.

When my cat clogged on one of my cars ..... 55MPH was the limit .... about 45 minutes later it was 45mph and kept going down .... you didn't want to take it up an incline. The next day the dealer couldn't get it over 20mph taking it to the exhuast shop.

I recall it making a funny noise .... especially when I gave it more gas .... sounded like air escaping under extreme pressure, it was raining that nite so I wasn't sure what it was.

Check the Cat.

I bet it's the converter also, I have had this happen also runs fine but has no power the faster you go. and like sliversport said IT WILL GET WORSE. But a test tube in and give it a try. Some parts houses carry them or a muffler shop can make 1 for not much money.

I think the test pipe idea is stupid. To install one you need to take the cat off, and when it is off, it will be obvious as to whether or not it is clogged.

use a vacuum gauge to check for clogged exhaust or convertor.

Another guy had the exact same problem you did a while back. Handyman and I argued over whether it was a timing problem or a clogged cat. I said clogged cat and the guy with the problem agreed but he never posted on whether he fixed his problem. So RYANSTOY, if you are out there, what ever happened with your truck?

I am going to be working at a local Ford dealer next week and I talked to my boss. He said just to take it off and look through it. If I can without a problem then I'm fine, if not then replace it right away. Thank goodness I use the shop anytime after hours.
