is it worth it
I recently acquired a 4 barrel edelbrock manifold and a holley 6oo carb and had planned on replacing the timing gear anyway. My question is; is it worth the trouble to put the manifold and the carb on the engine and should I get a timing set that will allow me to set up "straight up timing"? All smog equipment has been removed from the vehicle as emmisions are not an issue with the age of the truck where I live. My next question is; I also have a set of headers but am not sure if they are for the truck so if I replace the manifold and the carb will it run ok with stock exhaust until I can get the proper headers? The truck is in OK shape but I am not looking to put a bunch of money in it.
Thanks,
these engines were factory retarded 8 deg. swapping to a double roller set "straight up" will be of great benefit.
the engine should run just fine until you replace the manifolds with headers (IMO one of the best things you can do for those heads)
another thing to consider is removing the heads and grinding the thermactor humps out of the exhaust ports...the humps were used to pump fresh air into the exhaust due to emissions regulations...they are quite a restriction...assuming you are set up to grind on heads the only other cost would be a gasket set and a bit of time...
just my .02
p.s. in my own personal experience trying to build upon a high mileage engine the results often are not pretty...but with the modifications you mentioned it shouldnt be to much of an issue....be sure to keep your rpms down and plan for a possible rebuild in the future.
