Removing Manifolds
Also, one things that scares me some, is that the bolts going into the heads, are also original, so there is 20 some years of rust caked on them. Does anyone have any tips or methods that work on extrememly rusted bolts? Labor and time spent dont bother me, at least not as much as a broken bolt would.
Thanks
I just went through a similar job on my '85 F250 with a 460. I was only replacing exhaust manifold gaskets which had been leaking for quite a while. So I had a few bolts which had lots of hot exhaust on them for a while. I found that the way to get the bolts loose is with the hot wrench. Pull plugs out for working room, be sure wires are out of the way, and heat the head (engine head, not bolt-head) just where the bolts are till near orange-hot, with the torch. Then the bolts will come out, or at least mine did. Where my manifold wasn't leaking, I got most of them loose just by running the engine till it was on temp, then loosening them. Several had to have the torch treatment. I used a high-temp anti-sieze on the bolts going back together. Good luck and be careful not to burn anything with the torch.
