Some of you may have seen the old mags on my truck. Initially I didn't like them but I was thinking that if I could polish them to a near chrome finish they might just look pretty sweet. Is there a way I can do this myself, I know it will be alot of work but was wondering if anyone has done something similar and what steps you take. I'm guessing maybe a wire wheel then different grades of sandpaper down to a buffing with mothers polish or equivalent?
I really think these mags are nice and suit your truck.
I buffed mine with some fine sand paper to get rid of the scrapes and nicks then used lots of aluminum polish, that made them shine ever so nice.
It is a lot of work but the result is worth it.
Those are what I have. I polished them up real nice using a fine sand paper for the scratches, then a Flitz ball and their Flitz metal polish to get them shiny. At the cost of new rims, I think I like them fine. Here's an early pic of mine: https://www.ford-trucks.com/user_gal...=77037&width=0
I don't have a pic of it, but the walls of the cutouts are now painted body color. Looks sweet.
I too have a set of slotted mags that have seen their better days and are pretty stained. I don't mind the "brushed" look I just want to clean mine up some so I'm interested in the responses you get.
Right now on the truck I am running Cragar SS 5 spokes but they aren't perfect either and have some salt pitting.
I Had A Friend That Worked At A Shop Cleaning Alum. Dump Beds.the Stuff They Used Worked Great.just Sprayed It On And Hosed It Off Looked Like New Polished Wheels.not Sure What It Was Called.you Might Put The Word Out What Wheels You Want And Get A Good Deal That Way.i Bought A Set Of 4 Chrome Wheels And Baby Moon Hubcaps For $100.00.they Look Like New And Are Not The Cheap Rust In A Week Ones.you Never Know What You Will Find.

You could consider having them chromed, It not as expensive as you might think. Its cheaper than new wheels and you would have something unique and much easier to care for.
If those are true aluminum wheels, then aluminum brightner will remove stains and "brighten" them, but if they are the older magnesium alloy wheels, don't put aluminum brightner on them unless you want a flat black appearance. I would remove one and try a small amount on a spot on the rear of the wheel to find out.
I have the same kind of mags on my '53 and the best thing I have found to CLEAN them is put out by Mother's. It's a creme that goes on white and as it pulls the dirt out of the aluminum it turns black. It works well with ample amounts of elbow grease (put out by the user) I thought about trying to polish mine but was pleased enough by the Mother's cleaner that I didn't go any farther.
RJ, how do you like that Flitz ball? Is it too big? I use the Mothers mini powerball. I must say, I love it! I have billet wheels, so i use Mothers "BILLET", but by hand only. on my other aluminum rims, I use Mothers alum. poish, among others.

The Mother's ball is probably a better system than the Flitz, but I was pleased with the result for $20 off the TV. Here's a better look at the results I got: https://www.ford-trucks.com/user_gal...=75985&width=0
Thanks for all the responses! Randy I like the look of yours and would be happy with that. I guess the wire wheel would be a overkill for the first step, thinking about it now the fine sandpaper idea sounds better. will have to post pics of the before and after.
