Polished slotted mags?

Hey ya'll. I was wondering how to clean up a set of aluminum slotted mag wheels. They are "Western Wheel" brand. What do you reccomend to cleen all the black stuff off them and what product gives them a good shine? Thanks.

Spray them with degreaser and water and scrub with a cloth, wash mit, or sponge. If they are not clear coated, which they probably arent if they are 20+ years old, you can use some Mothers polish on them.

How about on some ranger aluminum rims which the clear coat is coming off them and they are beginning to corrode?

i just posted something about this the other day but i forget under which fourum it was so i'll just post again. on my first ranger (an '88) the factory alumn rims were shedding the clearcot in spots and looked bad. i took them to a place which does polidhing and chrome plateing to see if they could do anthing at all with them. (and it was winter and i had a second set of steel whells with snow tires on them, so i wasnt running them anyhow) well, they pushed out the rivits, stripped off the clearcoat. polished them and put the rivits back in. they looked like they had been chromed when i got them back, i was really impressed. i think it was about $75 a wheel. well worth the money. unfortionatly this company no longer exists, but there must be others around.

Hey, guess what i'm doing to those exact same rims. Yes thats right, I just paid over 100 dollars for a sandblaster and accessories, and now i'm going to strip and polish. I tired it a little bit, and put some polish, and it looks great. I cant wait to get them all done. I only paid 60 bucks for the set of 4 rims. My next question is what can I clear coat them with myself? I picked up some clear coat stuff for rims, hopefully it works, is there somthing better out there though?

I've also got a set of old slot mags; they do look good once they're shiny. Very fine sandpaper helps take it down past the pits, then Mother's puts a nice shine on it. But if it's got serious nicks from stones, you may need to put it on a lathe and take a light cut to really clean it up (saw them do that on a teevy show restoration). Some kind of hand-held power buffer would be a big help with the polishing; doing it by hand is tedious.
