What does everyone recommend for thread sealant for oil fittings on the engine block? I am running an auxiliary external oil line for a 351C (front plug back to oil press port in back) and I have had people tell me that teflon tape is not good for this application. Is there a better choice for sealant out there?
Thanks!
Why wouldn't a little permatex 2 or a daub of silicon work? They do make an official liquid pipe dope, but it might be a little expensive if you never use it much. I think people warn against teflon tape because people get crazy with it and it comes off and clogs up the works. If you where conservative and didn't wrap it down on the very end of the fitting, it would probably work ok too.
Loctite makes liquid and paste pipe thread sealants any of which will work or you can get some plain old teflon pipe dope at Home Depot, etc. Do not use any Teflon based dope on sensors or gage sending units, it will interfere with the ground.
Prematex makes an 'Aviation Gasket Maker' that is the only sealant I ever use. It looks and spreads just like molasass. I generally use it to coat and hold in place gaskets I've had myself but I've also used it for thread sealant in water and oil passages without any problem.
Silicone and oil don't go well together, something about the detergents break down the silicone and it will leak. I've never actually had any problems using teflon tape, but the secret is not to over-do it. If you put too much on, the threads won't seal properly, or wrap it the wrong way you will unwrap the tape as you screw the pieces together.
Some of that thread sealer stuff is pretty cool, and never had a problem with them either.

Ben
