87 octane or 93

I have a hypertech programmer on my 2000 ford 150 4x4 and always ran 87 octane but am thinking about running 93 for more horsepower-Truck manual says run 87. Anybody have an experience or advice about this! Thanks in advance

87 octane burns quicker than 93 so the engine should make more power if the everything is left alone and the tuning is the same....But with a tuner, when you run 93 octane it will advance the timing a few degrees which gives it more power... the reason is the fuel burns slower and is less likely to ping...or pre detonate....

My truck has much more power when i run the 91 octane tune over the 87... but for general use the 87 makes plenty..

Hope this made some sense...somebody else will have a better explanation im sure

Makes sense to me---put about 20 gallons(93) in tonight and changed the tuner-- will have to repost with performance updates ---with gas prices rising again i might go back to 87!

I run 93 octane. The tuner will advance the timing and lean out the fuel mixture to make more power. I also get almost 2mpg better on the 93 tune with my Diablosport Predator.

Did you re-mortgage your house to filler up!!?

I get a heck of a power boost when I use a higher octane.

Definitly not going $ to be a constant thing(way to expensive) but did notice a little more response in the throttle and a little more kick in the pants.

Just did the math and your right, But when you see the .14 per gallon price difference you kinda cringe at paying over three dollars for a gallon of gas! But definitly like the extra boost-----Truck manual says run 87/will 93 cause any sort of extra wear or damage?

no, your engine will probably run cooler but you will never notice that due to the thermostat is what controls the temperature of the engine...its not necessary to run 93 octane unless you have high compression or have advanced the timing and your engine starts to Ping or detonate..

But no damage will result or extra wear

never used octane boost.... how much is it for how many gallons and how much does it raise octane? Because if its much over 3 bucks, then its probably not worth it.
