Started my truck and immediately smelled something burning. Popped the hood and the alternator was frozen. AutoZone has a rebuild guaranteed for life for $150. Good choice? Also, there is some rubber build-up in the grooves of the pulleys. What is a good solvent to clean them with? Any recommendations for a new belt? Thanks to all.

Can't go wrong with a guaranteed for life alt. As for the pulley just use a wire brush to clean out the groves, and for a belt just use one from Autozone since your there..

I put in the new (not rebuilt) Duralast Gold Alt with lifetime warranty from AZ a couple weeks ago with no problems so far. Part No. is DLG3603-18-2. It was $179.
Just a warning about stuff thats "reman" alternator from pep boys autozone etc.
The lifetime warrenty is nice, but in the instance of my buddies contour. His alternator is a bitch to get to, and he got 5 bad alternators from them. We went through and checked everything because how the hell do you get 3 bad alternators in a row. The next after that lasted a couple weeks, the one after that was bad out of the box. The 6th one actually worked.
I usally go to a small local shop for an alternator. I paid 90$ for a reman and it works perfect.
That's why I went with new, John. But had I seen the 200A job for $50 more I would've jumped on that one. The only one I found was close to $350, so I just went with the new AZ one. I've been through the revolving alternators with my wife's Astro, and as bad as that one is to get in & out, I got pretty darned good at it. Fortunately, ours is a 15 minuite R&R, but that thought did cross my mind. If it wasn't such an easy job, I wouldn't have gone with the cheapest (new) option...
The warrenty is nice but you'll be going through a lot of them. I got a genuine motocraft from powerstrokeshop.com, 115 amp, just about 20 buck more after the core.
That high output deal looks cool, who makes it? Does it last?
It take like an hour to change it on the contours. I helped him once. After i was done i showed him where mine was he was pissed. LOL i changed mine in the parking lot of the alternator shop.
Spend the $20 more now, and get New, not reman. the New also has the lifetime warr. Have them bench test it right out of the box. I put 4 remans in one day on at AZone, before i figured out to have them test it first.
I wish I had the knowledge and the time, but given today's pace of life, it's "cheaper" for me to just buy it from someone. Would I like to learn? Definitely! But if I mess up, then the truck is down and I can't get to work. When I get a commuter car it will give me the luxury of "acceptable down-time" but for now, I can't.
