alternator and voltage Regulator test?????

hey guys,
my 85 302-swapped truck won't charge a battery, it runs fine but is not charging. i got the truck already built, but i believe it had this problem from the get-go. the voltage regulator was wired wrong, so i rewired it since i had nothing to lose... no dice, still not charging. I checked grounds, i checked continuity and the wiring again. is there a way to test the voltage regulator separate from the alternator (and check them both? how much is a new alternator, too? thanks
