Overdrive question

O.K. I haven't even really checked out the OD on this truck. (97 F350 PSD dualy) All I know is the button is on the gearshift lever(it's an auto). So what happens if I push it? Have I just been running in OD the entire time. At 65 mph it's running about 2100 rpm.

Yes at 65 mph it should be in OD if you didnt touch the button on the shifter, I think this is the big problem with these tranny,s when the truck is started the trans is always in OD should be the other way around and maybe there wouldnt be such a problem with these tranny,s I also have the auto and always take it out of OD when pulling up hill or just starting off with a load and never had a problem 2100rpm is normal at that speed mine is the same

i dont think taking it out of OD is going to help you from a dead stop. all it does is turn ur 4 spd tranny into a 3 speed. when u press the button it wont go into 4th gear.

79 is right. turning OD off won't do anything for the tranny other than turn it into a 3 speed. The only time you really need to turn OD off is when your truck starts hunting between OD and 3rd gear. Mostly happens when towing but your going at just the right speed that tranny can't decide which gear to stay in or you have to keep slowing down and the tranny is going back and forth. The hunting heats the tranny too much so you just turn OD off and keep it in 3rd until you are running good speeds again.

My od button is broke off with the wires just hanging there. Do I have to buy the whole shifter or can I get just the pushbutton?

Yeah, you can just buy the button. This is a somewhat typical problem.

It isn't a good idea to tow in OD with the cruise on and let it downshift itself on the grades. The cruise increases the throttle until it downshifts, so the tranny/torque converter has to endure a full throttle downshift with a big load. I like running the cruise, but I make sure I hit the OD button to shift into 3rd before starting up a hill. My tranny guy said that is really hard on them.

Hummmmm..I use Cruise all the time when towing on fairly level terraine. Never thought about a full throttle down shift...Guess I'll punch OD off at 2,200 when pulling a grade from now on...it usually down shifts at about 2K in cruise.
