E4od overdrive troubles

I have a '93 F150 4x4 with a 302 and the e4od. When the truck shifts into OD the engine labors and the truck slows, (just like the brakes are being applied). Then it will jump back into drive and be fine, until it goes back into OD. If I turn off the OD and drive around in 'drive' its fine. Any idea whats wrong with my transmission?

Can you force it to shift into 3rd with the throttle, or can you feel the converter unlock if you hold steady on the gas in overdrive, and touch the brake pedal?

It feels just like its locked in OD and direct at the same time. If you could lock it into OD and stand on the brakes at 40mph or so, it would feel just like that. As soon as it jumps out of direct and hits OD its slows down and the engine labors. I can get it to downshift if I give it about 1/2 throttle or more. I dont think the converter even has a chance to lock up in OD before the engine labors.
