Disable Wastegate Actuator?

<TABLE><TBODY><TR><TD vAlign=top width="100%">I have been told by another PSD owner that I should remove and plug the small vaccum line that goes to my wastegate actuator for a cheap HP increase. Is this right? Is there a downside? What about fuel milage?

Haven't really tried it with my stock setting, but it does make a marked difference with the DP Tuner. The turbo spools up faster and actually boosts a bit more (26-28psi vs. a max of ~23-24psi with it plugged in). I have mine off right now because it spools so much faster. When I get my Wicked Wheel installed, I'll test it again and see how it does.

You can try it both ways and see if you feel a difference, but gauges would help a lot to actually see if there's a difference. It won't hurt anything, unless the turbo overboosts, but that's not likely much of a problem without any kind of performance chip/tune. That's why gauges are so important with chips/tuners, BTW -- you can easily exceed boost & EGT limits and cause damage. But like I said, very unlikely with stock settings.

I have a AFE Stg II and a DP tuner on the way. Should I reactivate once that is all installed to be safe? Or just watch the gauges and mind the foot?
...And thanks the help!

just watch the gauge...thats your choice..when you do pull the red line off.. plug the end of the red hose..some just stick on the threaded part of the IC pipe clamp..

Good stuff, Nuckel. I would tell you this -- some folks here leave it connected. One of the reasons is surge, which I may be experiencing. I'm about to install a Wicked Wheel which will greatly reduce or eliminate it. Once you have all your stuff in, try it both ways and see what suits you (Definitely watch the gauges). Mine is staying disconnected...

Cool! Thanks for the tips. We'll be giving it a go. I also have gauges coming too, so I will be able to stay on top of it.

I read this thread and went and unplugged my line, it was runnin 18 or 19, @ WOT. with it plugged in, and 21-23 @WOT, with it unplugged, I also have a wicked wheel, also note, when I installed the Wicked Wheel, it dropped from an unknown, because I installed the gauges at the same time, sorry hopes this helps

Instead of unplugging the red line why not unplug the elbow from the Y-pipe that feeds the control solinoid and put a rubber plug on it. That way you are capping off that system completly and there is ZERO boost loss.
Clamp it down with a zip tie and trim the excess.

Dan, are you saying go ahead and disable the WG tube and drive around that way? I had mine on a boot clamp just at the strip and could hear that it was not the way to go for me with the surge and all. I drive around with it connected. Still rocks pretty well.

Izzy, are you towing heavily? I am not getting a WW. Gonna lose some low end there along with total flow capability. What are you trying to do again? Perform or tow?

Nope -- not towing much. Just interested in extra whistle. Been on the fence for a while, but I figured I'd at least try it out. I've heard the low end thing, but some say they don't notice it. Will let you all know how it turns out.

My personal preference is to keep the WG connected, but have the control rod adjusted to have the WG open at no less than 10-12 psi. Ford likes it at 5 but IMO that's a touch too early. It needs to have some oomph to spool up nice and quick.

I ran w/ mine off stock for quite a while, but experienced surge as I started to do upgrades. Once I got my Dp tuner w/ it on or off I was getting surge. Did the ATS housing and left it connected. I was hitting 24-26 psi max. I disconnnected it and it shot up to 30 psi. So I pretty much pulled over right away and reconnected it. Way too much boost.

My thoughts, only my opinion here, - fine to disconnect when stock and w/out tuner/chip. Connect it with chip/tuner to control boost w/ a stock turbo.
