My 16 year old son and I are restoring a 1968 F100. Someone already swapped engines in it, putting in a 302. It currently does not run, but we hope to have it running soon. We have discovered that when it is in park, the vehicle will still roll. Does this sound like a linkage issue? I am not sure if this is the original tranny or the one that came with the '79 302.
Thanks. Ken
Look at the bottom of the steering column under the hood...this is where the rod from the transmission attaches. If everything is correctly hooked up, you prolly have a broken parking pawl inside the transmission. They can and do break = here's how. Someone while parked on an incline puts the gearshift in Park, before engaging the parking brake. The vehicle will roll slightly, snapping off the pawl, or the pawl will snap when you try and get the lever out of Park.
Another cause: Worn shift linkage bushings will allow too much play in the transmission rods, so the rod might not be engaging park, even tho the lever is in park.

yeah i always engage the parking brake first. but one time when i got back in and started it back up i forgot to toss it in nuetral first and then release the parking brake, and it rolled forward hardcore and pushed that pawl to its limits, didnt snap though
I will check out the linkage and bushings first. If it happens to be the pawl, is that something I could do myself, or will that involve a tranny tear-down?
