on board compressor or tanks

I moved my spare to a mount in the bed. I was thinking about using the space under the bed to mount air tanks. Or should I just buy a compressor. Or use the tanks for the compressor?

Do you think sch40 pipe would work? Large diameter of course.

I may just use air for inflating tires only. (emergency use).

SCH40 will work... Do you trust your welds?

I think it would be easier to go into a junkyard and find one off of an 18 wheeler. They often have multiple taps available on them. Problem is you also now have to worry about internal rust, even if it is a small factor. Actually, it may just be easier to build one. But you would want to weld in some sort of bung about a 1/2" long that you could tap for NPT instead of just drilling a hole in the pipe and tapping that. I would also run OBA, ie- an onboard compressor.

I get about three trips out of my nitrogen bottle that is mounted in the bed. I use my air tools (Snap-on IM-6500 1/2" impact) to swap out the tires, and air them up if I plan on driving on the pavement. Cheap to re-fill, and pretty compact. I can fill the tires 40" from 6 psi to 20 psi each about 7 times if I don't run the impact.
It is an alternative to OBA.

I bought a brand-new Euclid sausage tank at a truck parts dealer, about 8" diameter. Price wasn't too bad, although for $25 more I could've bought an entire made-in-China 120V compressor with tank at some big-box discount store. Which might not be a bad idea if you need a regulator, check-valve, gauge etc for an on-board air system.

A friend of mine added an air compressor to his F-350 using a second a/c compressor, but didnt obviously add the freon, and used that to compress air into a tank. We all went up to Poso here in CA aired down and then when we were done aired right back up. This was really a genius idea!

AC compresses have been used for eons. Put in an electric pressure switch that will turn off the clutch at 120 psi. We use them or truck compresses on boats as well.

I just got my hands on 2 pieces of 6x4x1/4 inch rectangle tubing.
The pieces or 36 inches long, will this be enough volume to use as tanks?
What is the volume of the Powertank Co2 systems?

I maybe able to mount the tanks in the bed, but I will still see if it will fit under the bed.

Any other thoughts for the tank construction?

a 20 lb c02 tank will fill 20-40 tires up depenmding on size....15 bucks to have the tank filled and you can carry it anywhere with you, run air tools as well

The c02 is a liquid and converts to gas when released and thats why so much energy can be had from a little 20 lb tank

I have even seen people have homemade bumpers made out of pipe and use it as an air tank. They just have the fittings on the inside of the bumper where they cant get broken as easy

I run OBA on my bronco and have a 5 gallon tank sitting in the back bed area bolted to the side. One of the best mods you can make, I think. Runs tools, fills up tires and will do it all day long.
