I want to purchase a portable or hard mount compressor for my truck. I was wondering if I purchase a hard mount type of compressor, can I use it to inflate my tires and such without an optional air tank? Or, do I HAVE to also get the storage tank. Any advice would be appreciated...
You will not need a tank for most compressors that are hard mount. They are designed to inflate stand alone. Look at duty cycle, you can burn up a cheapo real easy inflating too long. If you want to run air tools some of the pricier ones can do it stand alone or you can have a tank that the smaller ones feed into. From my experiences a hardmount tank filled with air from a Quickair or the same type doesn't work well enough to justify the time and cost. If you are ever thinking about adding a locker get the ARB compressor, it will inflate tires as well as running a future ARB locker.
If you have the room and are around welding shops alot go with a CO2 tank. It will inflate tons of tires with 100% dry air, run air tools, and needs no electricity to operate. High up front costs and space are a factor with those though. They are getiing cheaper though. I think they are branded the Power Tank or something, alot of off-road shops carry them.
A nice trick for a dedicated off road rig is to use the A/C compressor. Most provide enough air flow to power air tools and can pressurize a tank real fast. You have to give up the A/C though!

Here is a company that adapts a York AC compressor for air up. They have some, (slightly), less expensive options as well. Good Luck.
I would like to have on-board air for adjusting shock absorbers and air-lift bags as well as inflating tires.
I also would like to keep the A/C.
I have this nice PTO that I would love to find a use for...
Anybody heard of York-type units adapted to a PTO?
Are there PTO driven compressors?
If you look above to my previous post there is an addrees: http://www.oasisoffroad.com/trailheadAirCompressor.html
This will take you to the company which turns York AC compressors into air compressors for mobile use.
