I used to break out when I shaved also. I started shaving in the shower and it fixed the problem. I guess my skin likes the steam from the water. Just buy a shower miror and try it.
I also splash on a little Aqua Velva after my shower. Maybe you need a good skin conditioner?
Well, I guess I'll chime in here. Here's what I do.
Shower with the fan off, window closed. Once I'm done, I crack open the window, and turn on the fan. Wipe the mirror. Apply Gillette shaving cream. Remove facial hair with Fusion.
No break outs, no bumps, no cuts.
Supposedly, the steam from the shower helps keep the pores open to prevent stuff getting stuck in there. Been shaving this way for a couple years now.
Wash my face first, with a cloth. Scrub fairly hard. Rinse off with hot water, and leave face wet with it. I use a mug and brush with some shaving soap that I get from my dad, who has been a master barber for 44 years and who taught me this whole scenario. I also use a straight razor, stropped with a piece of leather. Shave with the grain of the beard, slow, short strokes, and rinse the blade after every stroke. I always start on the left side (I'm right-handed), and work to the right side.
After finishing, clean the razor with a piece of paper (towels will dull the blade), rinse off my face with cold water, dry it, and apply some talcum powder.
I shave usually every other day, and can't remember the last time I cut myself, really.
Robin, are you sure you don't work for Aveeno? Just kidding. It's what I'll be picking up at the store this evening after work.
Well, I tried the whole shower, then shave, idea and it turned out pretty well. Sure, I've got some healing to do, but over all, no break outs. I didn't have any new aftershave to put on so I used antibiotic ointment to help deal with the open break outs and then went to bed after putting a tshirt over my pillow so it wouldn't get messy. This morning I was pleasantly surprised to find that it looks much better then yesterday and not a single break out.
I haven't decided whether I'll switch from antibiotic ointment to the aftershave...
Thanks for all the help everyone. It's the inconsequential stuff on this forum that make it worth that extra amount of time every evening.
Nah. I don't work for them. Actually I was on a date with this guy, and I found his chin to be unusually soft. I commented on it to him, only because he was really hairy. And I know you hairy guys have a rough time with the facial hair. (by the way. love the hair guys) Anyways, he recommended this specific Aveeno gel. It really does work well. I shaved Wedns. still smooth this morning.
Mug with a good shaving soap bar, and a shaving brush, hot water. Soap up, let it sit for a couple minutes, wipe off with a warm washcloth and re-apply. Then shave with the grain with a decent razor...I use a double bladed one. Your choice may vary. You won't need to press very hard.
If you're fresh out of the shower, you only need apply once, then shave.
Soap from a can never worked for me, and regular bar soap doesn't do it either. I have a Norelco triple as a travel shaver when I won't be easily around water for shaving, or get stuck away from home. But after using it a couple times, I need to get back to the soap and razor.
There's also a documented calming effect from the ritual of using the soap and razor method that doesn't seem to happen from using a power razor. Can't remember where I read it years ago, but some guys even reported that if they got stressed out they'd go and do the soap up and shave ritual and it helped them unwind.
Maybe tavern owners should have a barber on call in the corner offering hot towels and shaves ?
Ive never found an electric that works well. Ive tried various Remington, Norelco and Panasonic electric shavers and none of them shaves all that close.

When it comes to shaving the hair on the little womans back,I use a Toro push mower, and for the hair on her legs I use a Stihl weedwhip! The big industrial strength one.But for the hair in her armpits,I have to use a good old fashioned hammer and chisel!

You wouldn't happen to be married to my sister would you?
Actually I use to use a Braun electric shaver, but it krapped out.
Time for another Braun electric shaver.[/QUOTE]
I'll send you mine, it only has 20 emergency uses on it.
I like the fussion with a gel right after a shower.
I heard it sooths the savage beast. I'm too lazy to look back who said that.
e1p1 maybe?
